A Hamilton woman is dead after eating magic mushrooms.
Police say the 23-year-old died late last night. The case has been referred to the coroner.
The active ingredient in magic mushrooms, psilocybin, is classified as an illegal class A drug. It has effects similar to LSD.

Senior Sergeant Marcus Lynam, of Hamilton police, said the woman died at 10pm yesterday after consuming "a quantity" of magic mushrooms.
He warned the public of the dangers of the mushrooms, which contain an active ingredient classified as an illegal class A controlled drug.
The compounds in the mushrooms were psychedelics and caused a loss of reality and possibly paranoia. They can induce a "bad trip" and can be fatal.
"Under no circumstances should magic mushrooms be consumed," he said.
Mr Lynam said there was also danger in consuming any unknown wild mushroom.
Investigations were continuing to determine the exact cause of the woman's death and the matter had been referred to the coroner.
Police do not intend to release the woman's name.

this makes no sense...surely a freak adverse reaction...even the wrong mushrooms shouldnt result in collapse and instantaneous death

Proof? I'd like to see some evidence that this was a magic mushroom the woman consumed that killed her (or just a look-a-like), and that this was the only possible cause of death for the woman.
Oh, yeah: "Woman dies from magic mushroom."...And I'm the Jolly Green Giant, but wait...I haven't given any proof, so I shouldn't be publishing it as fact until I can back it up.
From my knowledge of Psilocybin containing mushrooms, especially native to North America, there aren't any psychedelic mushrooms that can kill you.

I agree, where is the proof? this just seems like another one of those "oh "drugs" were involved... that solves everything, just blame the mushrooms" bullshit if you ask me.

Psh, there is absolutely no way this woman died of acute psilocybin/psilocin toxicity. There may be an off chance she died of an allergic reaction to the mushrooms. More likely, she took shrooms, probably amongst other things and did something stupid resulting in her death, which was subsequently blamed on the mushrooms. Again, absolutely NO FUCKING WAY she died of psilocybin toxicity.

they obviously need to do an autopsy before identifying what actually killed her. They're jumping to the conclusion that it was from the same thing that her friends had eaten. Yet since they were all picking them wild and so easily could have have picked different kinds between them this suggests this is amature journalism. Yet why can I, far from a journalist see this and they can't?

A woman died last night after consuming a quantity of magic mushrooms.
Hamilton Police senior sergeant Marcus Lynam said investigations were continuing to determine the exact cause of death, although the matter had already been referred to the coroner.
He said: "She was with a group of people that went out and picked the mushrooms, Further investigations are continuing in to where they got the mushrooms from. They have come back home and consumed them."
The woman, a 23-year-old Hamilton student, had walked outside with friends and was on her way to another house when she collapsed.
An ambulance was called, and CPR administered. She was taken to Waikato Hospital's Accident and Emergency department. However, her condition deteriorated rapidly, and she was dead by 10pm.
It is not known how many people were in the group that included the girl. They had congregated at a house in Hamilton East when the tragedy unfolded.
Mr Lynam would not rule out the possibility that drug charges would be laid against the remaining people at the address.
Nobody else in the group fell sick. The ambulance was called when it became evident the woman was in serious trouble, Mr Lynam said.
The girl's parents, who also live in Hamilton but at another address, are said to be devastated.
Other next of kin are still in the process of being notified and police were not prepared to release the name of the dead woman at this stage.
The active ingredient in magic mushrooms is classified as an illegal class A controlled drug. It has hallucinogenic properties.
"At this time of the year mushrooms sprout everywhere, including magic mushrooms, be they in people's yards or where ever else," Mr Lynam said.
He warned of the dangers of all wild fungi, including toadstools, which children could easily consume unwittingly.
As everyone pointed out, it's a bit premature to be making assumptions about the culprit being psilocybin. They should wait until the autopsy has been completed before screaming it in out the national newspapers. There are no other details apart from some 23 year old girl collapsed on the way to her house. From what?
It also amazes me (well, I'm not TOO surprised) about the comments : "Mr Lynam would not rule out the possibility that drug charges would be laid against the remaining people at the address."
What nice blokes. Let's kick everyone while they're down. Besides, I assume they ate most of their evidence, or at least the evidence is long gone by now. What are they planning to charge them with? "Past possession of a natural substance that grows pretty much everywhere in Autumn?"

maybe she had a heart problem and it was triggered by the euphoria of shrooms, in which case it's believable. OR maybe the shrooms were contaminated but that wouldn't explain why the others were fine.

We should find actual medical proof that their is virtualy no toxicity level to psilocybin and that she did not die from magic mushrooms. Then forward that information to the editor to atleast make them aware of their assumptions. Most likely she died from mis-identifying a poisonous mushroom as a magic mushroom. Email the Herald newsdesk with any further information.

My ex-girlfriend use to get a very bad reaction to psilocybin mushrooms. She couldn't eat them period. She would get all pale, cold, shivery, light headed, heart racing and nauseous. So you guys should calm the fuck down with the outrage of this story. In most people mushrooms are perfectly safe. But few people could have some bad side effects whether its an allergy, or serotonin syndrome. All this over compensating for drug war propaganda isn't helping anyone either.

yah... bad effects. Just like your tripping girlfriend. A lot of girls(and guys) arent stable enough to handle a good trip but its most definitely not going to kill them! ever! They may kill themselves or die because of something stupid they do while on mushrooms.

this is the first article that i have found that actually has that right. EVERYTHING in the newspaper magazines, and e-zines is similar to LSD. this is the only time i have found it to be right. that was the only thing i liked about the article.
but dying due to shrooms? she must have done something else im sorry there is just such a slim chance of that, if any at all.

the autopsy will come back as either negative effects from a poisonous look-a-like... or, an allergic reaction of some sort. imo.
i guess if it was done in combo w/ something else she could have had an aneurysm or something... but, not likely on just mushrooms.
i will look forward to any follow ups.
