See...that's just sad. I wish one of these groups that claim things like "mushrooms kill people" would have the common sense to address the concept of FACTS.

"It has effects similar to LSD. "
this is the first article that i have found that actually has that right. EVERYTHING in the newspaper magazines, and e-zines is similar to LSD. this is the only time i have found it to be right. that was the only thing i liked about the article.
but dying due to shrooms? she must have done something else im sorry there is just such a slim chance of that, if any at all.

the autopsy will come back as either negative effects from a poisonous look-a-like... or, an allergic reaction of some sort. imo.
i guess if it was done in combo w/ something else she could have had an aneurysm or something... but, not likely on just mushrooms.
i will look forward to any follow ups.

Magic mushroom victim a heart transplant recipient New 10:00AM Saturday May 26, 2007
A woman who died after eating magic mushrooms has been named as a heart transplant recipient.
Te Awhina Hawera, 23, had a transplant at Auckland's Green Lane Hospital in 1997, the Waikato Times reported today.
Hamilton police Senior Sergeant Marcus Lynam said Ms Hawera was with a group of friends at a Hamilton East flat on Thursday when she tried magic mushrooms.
She later collapsed after complaining of being scared and cold. Ambulance officers performed CPR, but she died at Waikato Hospital about 10pm.
"It was just a small group of friends that decided to partake in magic mushrooms," Mr Lynam said.
Mr Lyman warned the public of the dangers of the mushrooms, which contain an active ingredient classified as an illegal class A controlled drug.
The compounds in the mushrooms were psychedelics and caused a loss of reality and possibly paranoia. They can induce a "bad trip" and can be fatal.
Ms Hawera's father, Piripi Hawera, who has also had heart surgery to replace a valve, told the Waikato Times his daughter was an outgoing person.
"She did a lot of things that amazed us. She did things that we thought would have been beyond her given her circumstances."

Ah ha, I thought perhaps a heart condition may be the culprit, but it's uncommon for 23 year olds to have severe heart conditions. I doubt the anti drug NZ public will understand that it wasn't psilocybin that killed her, it was the intensity of the trip (which can be said for roller coaster rides too).

Here's the follow up with more information and less hysteria.

Magic mushroom death may be first for NZ 5:00AM Saturday May 26, 2007 By Elizabeth Binning
A Hamilton woman who died after eating magic mushrooms is believed to be the first person in the country to have had a fatal reaction to the fungi.
Police say the 23-year-old student was rushed to Waikato Hospital in a critical condition after eating the magic mushrooms about 8.30pm on Thursday.
Senior Sergeant Marcus Lynam said the mushrooms had been picked from around Hamilton that day.
He said the woman went cold, became scared and then collapsed after eating an unknown quantity with friends at a party.
Her friends, who had also eaten the mushrooms without any problem, called an ambulance and CPR was carried out before she was taken to hospital. The Waikato University student died soon after.
Her family are said to be devastated and have asked the police and the university to respect her privacy and not release her name.
Mr Lynam said police were still awaiting toxicology results and while they could not conclusively attribute the woman's death to the mushrooms, the fungi did appear to be linked in some way.
Poisons Centre medical toxicologist Michael Beasley said people tended to experience shivering, muscle aches and lightheadedness and become fearful within half an hour of ingesting magic mushrooms.
Within an hour they sweated and experienced hallucinations similar to an LSD trip.
Dr Beasley said in some rare cases people had suffered seizures and heart problems but he was not aware of anyone dying in New Zealand or overseas after having magic mushrooms.
Dr Beasley said people more commonly died after eating a different species of mushrooms called Amanita, one of which is commonly known as "the death cap" and could cause liver or kidney failure.
In 2005 a Waikato man needed a liver transplant after eating a death cap that was growing in his backyard.
Sergeant Pete Whittaker of the Hamilton police said last night the woman had an existing medical condition and was on medication.
"It's too early to establish the exact cause of death. Early indications are there were other medical conditions that may have contributed to her death."
He said it was reported to police that she had taken magic mushrooms. "But inquiries are still going to establish whether that was the case," he said.
Fatal fungi
* One species of mushrooms, the Amanita phalloides - known as the death cap - can cause liver and kidney damage and has been known to kill people.
* Magic mushrooms belong to a different species, not considered as dangerous. Effects include hallucinations and in rare cases seizures or heart problems and last for between four and six hours.
* The active ingredient in magic mushrooms, psilocybe, is classified as an illegal drug and people caught with them can be charged with possession of a class-A drug.
_____
Seems a bit more well written now that all the facts have been considered. They should have waited and written the piece above FIRST, rather than getting everyone all worked up over killer magic mushrooms. The only link between her death and magic mushrooms is that the experience was too much for her heart. A similar thing would have happened on a roller coaster or anything that rapidly increases your heart rate.

Considering they were wild, they were probably toxic. Some people are retarded; I've seen my friend eat random orange mushrooms growing on the ground. I tried to explain that there are only 5 - 10 commonly found species of magic mushrooms and there are tens of thousands of species of mushrooms in general, but he didn't listen. He ended up throwing up twenty times. Thank god he didn't eat more.

"In 1978, Jonathan Ott reported that the "Ld50 (lethal dosage) in mice for psilocybin has been determined to be 280 mg/kg, oral ingestion", thereby assuming that a person of average weight (i.e. 70 kg/155 lb) person, "would have to ingest l9.6 grams of [the extracted chemical] psilocybin to produce death."

Bullshit.
You cannot equate mouse-kilos to human kilos. Mice usually are phenomenally able to detoxify alkaloids and other poisons, and thus can often withstand much higher doses thereof. It's not rare that what doesn't kill one kilo of mice will kill several whole humans.
Example: the oral LD50 of Nicotine is 230mg/kg in mice. That amount will actually kill two to five people. If you use Ott's science abuse you would calculate that 17250mg is the human LD50. But actually that amount is a bit off. That amount kills 280 people. So Ott's logic just killed half of five city busses packed with people.

"However, in 1989, Dr. Karl L. R. Jansen at the University of Auckland stated that he believes that "the LD50 (the dose at which 50% of a sample will die) has been determined as 280 mg/kg in mice. However, it is not valid to calculate the LD50 for humans by a simple percentage/weight calculation. Mice and humans have very different metabolic rates and dispose of drugs in different ways. It is unlikely that even a large number of psilocybine mushrooms would not be toxic in humans, but we cannot suggest an exact figure from data based on rodent studies."
If you had followed the link he follows with this. Should have posted the whole thing, sorry man.

wtf! how do they not know that she ate a poisonous mushroom. they just assumed that she ate ONLY magic mushrooms, of at least tried to make it seem that way. i think it was just some inexperienced hunters that picked bad shrooms!

Maybe she ate a pound or three of the mushrooms she found...Typical dose of psilocybin in an eighth of an ounce of dried shrooms is around 30-40mg of psilocybin...so lets say she weighed 130 lbs..she would have to eat almost eight ounces of dried mushrooms. Since they were fresh, that would have been about 70 ounces or about 4.35 pounds...I really don't think she ate close to 4 pounds of mushrooms.
That's only an estimate based off the LD50 though. But still...the amount of mushrooms she would have to eat to OD on psilocybin is probably more than she could eat.

The IV LD50 in rabbits is 12.5mg/kg, for mice it's 285mg/kg. I've done the figures before for 280. But if my figures are right it would take about 1.9 pounds of wet mushrooms using the rabbit LD50 for 150 pounds. That would be 85 grams or about 3 ounces dry.
LD50 (in rats) = 280mg/kg. (from the National Library of Medicine) The LD50 in humans is, of course, undetermined because NOBODY HAS EVER DIED FROM INGESTING PSILOCYBIN.
The average human is around 150 pounds. 150 pounds is about 68 kg. 68kg * 280mg/kg = 19,040mg.
So that gives us an estimated LD50 of about 19 grams for an average human.
Psilocybin/psilocin content ranges up to about 1% in active mushrooms.
1% is 10 mg per gram of dried mushrooms. Mushrooms are 90% water so that works out to about 1 mg per gram of wet mushrooms.
1 mg/g * 19,040 mg = 19,040 grams
So to get the LD50 dose of psilocybin from fresh mushrooms you'd have to eat 19,040 grams of mushrooms.
19,040 grams is about 42 pounds!
Around 100 people per year die from unintentional Tylenol overdose.

Even if the reaction to the Psilocybin (or another chemical in the Psilocybin mushroom, if a Psilocybin mushroom *is* what they ate) is an alergic reaction, and very uncommon, it won't matter to the authorities. Their reply would be: "Yeah, well, if it has any chance of killing people, then I'm glad it's outlawed!" To which we reply with "Well, then lets make Peanut Butter illegal. " To which they shake their heads, plug their ears, and mumble 'lalalalala' over and over...

The news paper has failed to seek out and print any revealing taxonomical information, nonetheless, I kinda suspect they were eating Amanita muscaria.... or what they thought were A. muscaria anyway.
Regardless of the questionably identity of the mushroom she ate or the failures of the New Zealand based news paper, the story is tragic. I feel a tremendous degree of empathy for all those involved. Twenty three is pretty young to be giving up the ghost and her friends must be extremely heart broken.
People need to educate themselves before collecting, identifying, and eating wild fungi as the consequences can be truly profound.
