this was discussed a few weeks back following that protest rally thing. at that time i found a quote in my labor economics book that i found rather interesting, so i'll quote it here
Quote:
it's really interesting we're discussing this, because i'm studying up on it as we speak for my labor econ exam. i found a paragraph rather interesting.
"Illegal immigration has been the major focus of immigration policy in recent years, so it is interesting to consider how it, in particular, is likely to affect the overall disposable incomes of American citizens. While the exact answer is unknown, three considerations suggest that illegal immigration may be more likely to increase native incomes than legal immigration!
"First, illegal immigrants come mainly to work, not for purposes of family reunification. Therefore, they clearly add to the production of domestic goods and services. Second, while they tend to be poor, they are ineligible for many programs (welfare, food stamps, social security, unemployment) that transfer resources to low-income citizens. Third, despite their wish to hide from the government, immigrants cannot avoid paying most taxes (especially payroll, sales, and property taxes); indeed, one study indicated that 75 percent of illegal immigrants had income taxes witheld but that relatively few filed for a refund." - 9th ed. Modern Labor Economics: Theory and Public Policy
that basically just backs up exactly what cowgold said. and if you'd like the citations of the sources the paragraph talks about, i can give them to you.
now, this is only regarding the economic aspect of illegal immigration, not the social. however, i still feel it is significant.

Yeah man.
Lets not forget the Chinese built the railroads. We're supposed to be a melting pot, though every creed that has passed the gates has dealt with lazy, scurred, WASP reluctance whether they be Micks, Degos, kikes, a-rab, wetback, kraut, chink, jap, gook, polack, nigger, or whatever.
The natural born American citizen has a lot to fear, they have a surpluss of resources the rest of the world has not earned... by being born here and it is their birth right no matter how hard it is people who know about true desperation, oppression, starvation, exploitation, genocide are willing to work for their fair shot...so they stereotype them and call NIMBY and want electrified fences and all that shit so we can keep getting fat off of shit we are entitled to just because we happened to be born right here.
And when you think about some of the greatest marvels in this country, such as the railroads and the bridges and all that shit, and who the majority of the workforce was that did all of that, it really makes me wonder how some of these hypocrites can take pride in anything this country is supposed to be about.
Let 'em in, let 'em work. If these people feel that they don't have a chance to do it legally, make it easier.
I am really interested in how strict the immigration laws have gotten over the past, say, hundred years or so, because the stories I hear about my ancestors coming over here legally, it seems all you needed was to show up at Ellis Island.

At midnight all the agents and the superhuman crew
Come out and round up everyone that knows more than they do
And they bring them to the factory where the heart attack machine
Is strapped across their shoulders and then the kerosene
Is brought down from the castles by insurance men who go
Make sure that no one is escaping from Desolation Row
