Rye to Coir Problems

About 10 days ago, I spawned a pint of rye to coir. The ratio was about 1:4, 1:5. Not exactly sure. I put an additional layer of rye on top to act as a contaminate barrier.
It seems as if growth has stopped for the past 4 or 5 days. The casing has pulled away from the sides.
Can moisture be the cause? Perhaps a 24 hour soak? Any thoughts are more than welcome. Cheers

Yeah if it puled from the sides you need more moisture.

That was the worst possible thing you could have done. NEVER leave grains on the surface where they're exposed to contaminants. You didn't make a contaminant barrier, you made a contamination magnet. Always cover any grains with your substrate material. If you don't, they dry out, and the mushroom mycelium goes into stasis, and then the faster growing molds can take over and grow on your exposed grains.
The whole thing looks green in the top picture. If that's just crappy lighting, then it's ready to case. I hope it succeeds for you, but don't hold out high hopes with all that exposed grain on top. RR

God Damn! I thought I was following good advice. It is just bad lighting. There is no green at all on the top.
Ready to case? It just seems that the rest of the substrate isn't colonized.
Is mixing the substrate and re-incubating to aim for full colonization another bad idea?

Very bad idea. You can apply the casing to a bulk substrate anytime after 90% colonization. I've noticed some parts of a substrate often never colonizize. I assume it's bacteria, but it usually doesn't hinder fruiting. RR

Cool advice. Good to know. Thanks!

Thanks, Senor Rabbit. Is it a bad idea to soak it for 24 hours first, to rehydrate?

Usually, six hours is plenty for a manure or coir bulk substrate. Brf cakes and sawdust/woodchip substrates are more dense and need longer. Use gently running water and let it overflow the tray during the soak and it will help to wash off some of the contaminant spores that may be present. RR
