 Help Needed - Puppy with Broken Jaw :(

Hi All,
As some of you might know I work with a local animal rescue group as a foster home. I got an awful, disturbing email from one of the rescue coordinators today. I'm copying the text of the email below. Basically, the rescue needs donations, large or small, to help with this little guy's medical bills. What his "owner" did to him is just unthinkable. "Rascal is a 5 year old purebred papillon who weighs only 7 pounds. On Saturday, April 21, 2007, I got a call at home from the Tipton County Shelter. Rascal's owner had just dumped him at their kill shelter and they said he needed help desperately or they would have to euthanize him right then. Of course, I took off to get him and took him to Hillcrest Animal Hospital in Memphis.
Rascal's owner said that another dog in the neighborhood had attacked Rascal and broken his jaw. The owner waited THREE DAYS to even take Rascal to a vet. When they found out what it would cost to put Rascal back together again, they said NO WAY and dumped him instead at the Tipton County kill shelter. He was a shivering wreck and was in severe pain.
Dr. Ledbury at Hillcrest performed surgery to wire Rascal's jaw together -- the surgery took three hours because there were so many fractures in his jaw. It will be wired together for 4-6 weeks, so I'm trying to find a temporary foster home for him in Memphis. His medical bills just through last night are $1,500. As you know, I've got 40 Tipton Shelter dogs at Hillcrest right now and boarding alone is $10 per night per dog. I just could not afford to do this for Rascal but I couldn't say no either.
Dr. Ledbury did say that there is no way Rascal's injury is the result of a larger dog attacking him -- Rascal had no puncture wounds and no internal injuries besides his broken and shattered jaw. Someone kicked that little tiny baby in the face!

I don't understand what could posess someone to kick a 7 pound dog in the face?

Right now I am fostering another dog from this rescue group who is the victim of some asshole "owner". Emma is a beagle puppy who was shot twice in the back and left to die. She's paralyzed from the waist down right now

people do shitty things to dogs...
my parent's have 13 acres of land out in rural oklahoma... so they have a pretty good sized pasture that's mainly just a grazing spot for cows.
well, one day my dad went out to the pond and noticed someone illegally set up a deerstand on his property without even asking. My dad tore it down. a few days later he let the dogs out to run in the pasture. they ran towards the pond and my dad hears a gunshot and a dog yelping. he jumps in his truck, but doesn't see anyone. he sees a trial of blood, but can't find his weinie dog.
they hunt and hunt for her, then the next morning he finds her under his truck, whimpering with a mangled leg. he takes her to the vet and she ends up having one of her front legs amputated.
then a couple months ago my mom calls her dog to come in for the night. she just hears him whimpering in the wooded area out in the pasture... so her and my dad go walking around with just a flashlight... and finally find him, with his paw in a claw trap. first of all, those type of traps are illeal, and second of all, someone is again hunting illegally on his land. third of all, there were 5-6 of them, and my mom or dad could have easily stepped in one while looking for the dog.
my dad still doesn't know who's hunting on his land.
when he does I hope he shoots off the fucker's arm and snaps a claw trap on his foot. it's oklahoma and we have the "make my day" law, which basically means if someone is trespassing you have the right to shoot them.

That's so fucked up. In our old house we had 50 acres of woods, and not too long ago caught some guys that were clearly planning to hunt the deer on the property. Those deer are completely unafraid of people because they've lived their whole lives inside the 50 acres, which is surrounded by a big stone wall on 3 sides of it....so they would have been easy targets. My fiance told them if he sawt hem there again, he'd shoot them. All I can think of is that my yellow lab could have easily been mistaken for a deer from far away. If someone shot her, I would fucking freak out.
I'll never understand how people are so mean to animals. This poor guy Rascal - 7 pounds with a shattered jaw?! At least he'll have a 2nd chance at a good life. He deserves it
They've got another dog there too, named Tracker, who they found shot in the leg, he's a little beagle pup. I don't understand, what is it with people shooting beagles? The rescue coordinator speculates that because beagles are popular hunting dogs, these dogs were brought out on a hunt, and didn't "do their jobs" and were deemed worthless and shot.

I'd give money if I could,but I can't.
if there is a way to get the owners address and info to me. I'll make sure he gets so many harassing phone calls and so many letters and packages full of turds that he will go crazy.

I wish there was a way to get the address - they surrendered the dog to the shelter and walked away, thinking it would be put to sleep and that would be the end of it.

My grandmother told me never to trust a person who doesn't like music, animals or kids.
Poor Rascal. It makes me so sad knowing there's people out there that would direct thier anger in such a hurtful, negative, violent way. He's 7 pounds! He's just a little trusting pup!
Liz, I'm really proud of you for helping little critters like Rascal and Emma.

I think that your grandmother is right - that's a good motto!
I keep playing over and over again in my mind what this little dog could have possibly done to result in this. I mean, I can see someone getting mad at some chewed shoes, or an accident on the carpet, but christ, he's a fucking dog! And this did not result from ONE kick to the face. This dog has multiple breaks in his jaw, so likely was kicked in the face over and over again. I hope someday this person gets treated with such cruelty.

I used to hate my roommate's little Pomeranian/Miniature Schnauzer mix with a passion, but I could never kick the fucker repeatedly in the face. Throw my shoe at him or something, sure, but I just let Karma handle it and sure enough the dog (which was never trained in any way, shape, or form WHATSOEVER) ran away shortly after the girlfriend it was bought for ran away 
I guess my roommate needs to learn how to train his bitches 
Anyway I donated what I could and I hope the best for the little anklebiter.

I'm in Memphis and I would love to give the little guy a place to stay, but I still live with my parents and I discussed it with them and they told me they would rather not. There is usually no one at my house for several hours during the day, and from the looks of things Rascal would need someone around at all times. I'll definitely make a few phone calls and see what I can do though.

I know how that goes, I put 1200 into my cat's arm. Local kids at my old apt. complex broke his humerus. I still need to pay that off... fuck.
Also, get the police to investigate it. They'll jail the owner and make him/her pay all fees. Animal abuse is as bad as child abuse. Fuck that shit man.

aight a few things to point out. Coulda been a car that did the damage. Theres lots of stupid dogs that literally try to bite tires. If it wasnt a car then the owner could say it was. Theres not a shred of evidence unless the guy actually admits it or we devlop the technology to allow dogs to talk and legally testify on the stand. Another thing for vet bills. I work with a wildlife rehab corp that my mom created almost 10 years ago. All our vet stuff is pro bono. Find a vet thats down with throwing in some time and resources every so often for charity cases. Hell a vet i worked with repaired a f'd up cat, did a couple $k of work on him and the owners told him beforehand that they couldnt afford it. Vet ended up keeping the cat (dont ask me why he didnt just give it back) but i guess the owners would rather give up the cat than see it die. Payign $10 a night for dog boarding is rather crazy if its a dog rescue group, ya'll should have foster families that can board the animals and trained people who can board animals that need sub-q fluids, dressing changes, and antibiotics.
Right now im caring for my neighbors chicken who got attacked by a fox (same fox that ate 5 out of 8 of my ducklings). kinda out of the scope of wildlife rescue but the poor buggers neck is either broken or her equilibrium is fucked. It cant stand and its head is always twisted and upside down, reminds me of upside down face boy from Family Guy. Anyways, hopefully this one pro-bono vet will do xrays on it soon so we cna determine the proper course of action (euthenasia or sucking fluid out of its tempanic membrane) but the doc typically will only do pro-bono for wildlife. meh ive prolly seen more animals die (and euthenized) rescuing them than if i was a hunter this whole time. it sucks but sometimes it comes down to cost and ya that blows.

You're right, there's not a shred of evidence other than what the vet said, and some good old common sense - if a dog has multiple fractures to his jaw, and not a single scratch on the rest of his body or other internal injuries, he most likely didn't get hit by a car. Also, let's say for a minute that he WAS hit by a car - the very fact that the owner admitted waiting 3 days before seeking help for his dog's severe injuries constitutes animal cruelty.
We have a ton of foster homes, my home included. The problem is that there is an endless stream of dogs, and not an endless supply of foster homes willing to take them in. With anywhere from 100-150 dogs at this shelter every day, it's simply impossible to keep up with the flow of animals. I had 2 foster dogs at my house until this morning, when 1 of them was picked up by her new owner. Now there's 1 here. On Saturday another 1 is coming, so I'll have 2 again. Some of the foster homes that are available in the Tennessee area have upwards of 8-10 dogs staying there, to try to help avoid some of the boarding costs. With so many hicks refusing to take responsibility for spaying and neutering their animals, and letting them run free on their farm land popping out litter after littler, there is simply no conceivable way that all of them can be in foster homes. The rescue is faced with a choice - board the dogs, or let the shelter euthanize them. To them, it's a clear choice, board them until a foster home opens up.
The vets and veterinary technicians at the Hillcrest Animal hospital do PLENTY of favors for the rescue - they often knocks substantial amounts of money off of the "tab" that the rescue racks up in terms of treating animals for heartworm, spay/neuter procedures, vaccines, antibiotics, and everything else that happens on a regular basis. Many times the vet techs takes the severe cases, like this one, back to their homes to care for them and give them special attention at no cost, so that they are not stuck at the hospital overnight.
It should also be mentioned that this is a SMALL vets office, and the shelter is in a very rural area. They don't exactly have the resources to be doing free surgeries all the time, although in a perfect world I'm sure they would love to be able to do that.
