Will humidity escape through polyfill?
    #6827094 - 04/24/07 01:21 PM (6 years, 26 days ago)

I want to get some FAE in my terrarium. Im wondering if i put polyfill in the sides of my terrarium if it will drop the RH to much

Make holes and forget the polyfill. You want air exchange.

How do you figure that? If the air exchanges the humidity goes with it. That's why we use perlite in the bottom is so we can have air exchange with a constant evaporation of moisture from the perlite to replenish the humidity as it's lost.

As said, drill holes and forget polyfill. There's absolutely NO reason to even attempt to filter air in a terrarium.

okay but the polyfill limits the air exchange so your humidity doesn't go down yet you still get the much needed exchanging air. Isn't that right?

I answered your question above, as well as over 100 times in the last six months. Please do a bit of research and study. Everything you're asking has been asked many times before and detailed answers are already available on the forum. Terrariums are not sterile, nor do they need to be. Attempting to cut down on fresh air will only encourage contaminants.

Can Ythan add some kind of symbol or marker that can denote "Approved Helper" status for select members who have mushroom cult. DVDs, or some other professional level knowledge?

After a few months and over 1000 posts, I can see who knows their shit... but it might help other members know who is talking from real ezperience, and who is talking out their ass.

I know searching before asking is key, but even in searches it's hard to tell who has solid info and who may just be making shit up, or embelishing something they heard.

Just because someone doesn't have 5000 posts doesn't mean they are new either.

I am in no way, however, implying that I have anywhere close to the amount of knowledge OR experience on the subject as RR.
He, afterall, is a multi-species master of the art.

I'm only saying that the number of posts doesn't necessarily equate to experience.

Not sure if you were referring to me but most research will tell you the importance of proper sanitation as to keeping insects out etc.

Stamet recommends a Class 2 pre-filter and a electrostatic 1 micron 95% efficiency filter.

When we speak of contaminants, we're talking about molds. Insect control is a household problem, not a mycology problem. It should go without saying to keep insects out of a grow project.

Window screen will prevent bugs entering without cutting down on air exchange, which is important to prevent contaminants. Polyfill and other filters will allow gas exchange during colonization. It seems many new growers still don't understand the difference between gas exchange, and air exchange. The former is used during colonization of spawn and bulk substrates, the latter is important during fruiting.

Going to modify the pre-filter part but works very well for my air-exchange (6 times/hour). Also helps keeping the space & fan clean.
I'm also going to mount one of those tiny HEPA filters that are used for vacuum cleaners :mushroom2:
