2,000 pot plants found

Nearly 2,000 pot plants found
YORBA LINDA – Police officers Friday night pulled almost 2,000 marijuana plants – with an estimated street value of $2 million – from a home here in a residential neighborhood.

At 7 p.m. Brea police, who patrol Yorba Linda, served a search warrant in the 19900 block of Crestknoll Drive, entered the home and found the entire second story turned into a growing terrarium for marijuana plants, authorities said today.

They had received an anonymous tip.

Kurtis Daniel Helm, 29, an unemployed office manger, was arrested on felony charges of possession, growing and cultivating marijuana with intent to sell.

He was also charged with injuring electric lines and theft of utility services; police and Southern California Edison officials say he tapped other lines to help cultivate the plants. They estimate the use of electricity at $25,000.

Helm posted $50,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court on June 13. Helm has rented the home for two years.

According to police, each of the three upper-story bedrooms was filled with plants in varying stages of growth.

The first bedroom had almost 1,500 two-inch-high plants; the second had 100 plants, ranging from 2 to 6 inches tall; and the third bedroom had 80 plants – some as tall as four feet.

The bedrooms contained grow lights to simulate sunlight and an elaborate irrigation system. The windows were lined with reflective covering, helping to keep a temperate climate for the plants.

The plants were removed from the house and booked into evidence at the Brea Police Department.

"This operation could yield 25 to 30 pounds of marijuana a month and have an estimated street value of $2 million," said Brea Lt. Jack Conklin.

30 pounds = $2 million. I wonder how they figured that out. By my calculation, to make $2 million off of 30 pounds, you'd have to sell $500 eighths. I hate when the police pull these bullshit numbers out of their ass.
