NSW Shroom Season 2007
    #6807114 - 04/19/07 02:25 AM (6 years, 2 months ago)

The NSW shroom season has finally kicked off, have had no luck for the last few weeks but today I struck gold   Found these p. subaeruginosa along central NSW coast, managed to chase down 70g fresh, here's my 30g left after being divided amongst good friends. The upcoming season is lookin good

Awesome! Great to hear the first report of the season. I've been toying with the idea of hunting this weekend but the past week has been so warm, it seems a little premature. I'm surprised you managed to find them on the coast so soon -  I usually  stick to the mountains until well into winter.  Anyway,  nice work mate!

By the way, I think Azurescens is strictly a North American species .. those must be Subaeruginosa  or some closely related species??

Grats!

"central NSW coast" aye? thou speaketh in riddles!

It'd make sense though, the coast has been seeing a lot more isolated rain than the mountains and west..

Sydney is set for chance of showers all next week

Well with the absolute pissing down we've had in Sydney today, coupled with a nice wet forecast for the mountains this week, I predict I'll make my first NSW finds this weekend!
Doesn't hurt to be hopeful...
Any other NSW hunters about?

There are no P. azurescens in your country. They come form Hammond and Astoria, Oregon and some along the Washington and parts along the Oregon Coast also.

Look Like some kind of active if their not azurescens. What are they then mj, or is their not enough information based just upon the pictures?

Well, he is in NSW, Australia, so maybe Psilocybe caerulipes?

Nice long stipes on those, just like the Cyans I find. What was the habitat/substrate??

they look like Azurescens to me. Just because they are not reported in Australia doesn't mean they or some similar, unidentified species doesn't grow there.

Look like p. subaeruginosa to me. But they were found much further north than me - not sure what you may find up that way...

psiclops,

P. azurescens does not have a chanterelle dip-like cup in the center of the caps with age.

They have permanent umbos which stay as an umbo or protrude, even in aging, as seen in the two imags below with the hygrophanous color change occurring with age.

They do not have pockets in the center of the caps where the umbos are in P. azurescens as do the shrooms in the picture posted at the beginning of the thread. I do not see how you think they look like P. azurescens because they do not.

They are P. subaeruginosa and here is a similar image, with a depressed cap in the center of the cap. These are from blue Meanie who lives in Australia.

mj

AS I noted, P. azurescens does not grow in Australia or New Zealand. They are indiogeopus only to the northwest Oregon Coast and a little into Washingto. Some are transplanted in Washington, but those only last a yeara nd are gone. Same as those planted in Germany years ago by Gartz and those who tri9ed planting them in New York, Austria, Switzwerland, and New Mexico and Ohio. They do noot come back the following year.

However, those ones in Australia pictured here are nowhere like P. azurescens.

mj

Here are some P. azurescens in quantity.

Hehe, sorry, I meant Ps. subaruginosa! I accidentally typed Ps. caerulipes instead.

I know that subs are native to Australia, but can they be found in NSW and all of Australia?
I don't think Blue Foot are native to any part of Australia.... Sorry for the mis-type.

Subs certainly found in southern Australia - Tasmania, Victoria, South Australia, southern parts of Western Australia, Australian Capital Territory and parts of New South Wales.

I *think* it is too warm in northern NSW, Queensland and the Northern Territory - there are other active species there that I have no experience with (copes and cubes perhaps?)

Maybe someone from up that way can set me straight?

Hey guys! Indeed they are p. subaeruginosa, not sure where I got the azurescens from :S  Had a decent shroom off the 30g on the weekend, hopin to find a few more this week. There was a good downpour early this week so it's lookin good, hopefully some more NSW shroomers will start havin luck and postin some piccies of their finds

CureCat The area is mainly sub-tropical bushland over a few small mountains. Found most of them growing along walking-tracks hidden under thick vegetation either side of track.

Thankyou for your feedback and help guys, keep it up k+

Tasmania is Australia mj...it's just a state, even though it looks like a pubic thatch tacked on the map.  But no Queensland?  It's Tasmania that's supposed to be routinely forgotten, now I know how they feel! :tongue2:
