Mother blames girl's murder on hallucinogenic mushrooms
    #6764736 - 04/09/07 09:54 AM (5 years, 1 month ago)

http://www.sltrib.com/news/ci_5625165

The mother of a 15-year-old Murray girl who died from a gunshot wound to the head over the weekend says a boyfriend's drug-induced rampage is to blame.

Kara Hopkins was removed from life support around midnight Saturday, nearly 10 hours after her boyfriend - high on hallucinogenic mushrooms - shot her, said Kara's mother, Pat Hopkins.

"He was high on mushrooms," said Pat Hopkins, who said she spoke to witnesses to the shooting. "He was gunning for her."

The boyfriend, 18-year-old Parley Jeffs Dutson, was experiencing paranoid hallucinations during a party at his West Jordan apartment Saturday when he grabbed a gun and chased after Kara Hopkins, Pat Hopkins said.

As Kara Hopkins hid behind a friend, Dutson shot the pistol once, the mother said.

"Parley shot, [the friend] ducked, and it hit her in the back of the head," Hopkins said.

Dutson was booked into the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of attempted homicide but will likely face a homicide charge, said West Jordan police spokesman Capt. Cary Cox.

Police have released few details of the shooting, but Cox said Dutson shot once, hitting Hopkins in the head during a party at an apartment in the Willow Cove apartments at 9300 S. Redwood Road.

Hopkins called the shooting a "tragic mistake."

"It's tragic for Kara, and it's tragic for Parley," Hopkins said.

The mother described her daughter as "my little princess." The Murray High School sophomore enjoyed jazz and hip-hop dancing and was interested in law, Hopkins said.

Kara Hopkins had dated Dutson for about a year, Hopkins said, and the two met years earlier while Hopkins lived in St. George.

Dutson came over for dinner most Sunday nights, Hopkins said.

"He was a good guy," she said. "He's always been great to her. He's always treated her with respect. And me, too."

Hopkins said she knew Dutson well and never knew him to use drugs or be around guns. She said a friend of Dutson's had kept a handgun in Dutson's apartment.

"I think he just got in with the wrong people," Hopkins said. "I have mixed feelings about him. I always liked him. [But] I hope he's punished for what he did."

Dutson is from a polygamous community in Colorado City, Ariz., and others who have left the community were at the party that night, Hopkins said.

Friends of Kara Hopkins posted condolence messages on her Web page on Myspace.com, a social networking site popular among teenagers.

Dutson is listed as one of her heroes on the Web page.

The site includes a list of survey questions, including "how I want to die." The answer listed on Kara Hopkins' site: "Peacefully, with someone I love."

Exactly what I was thinking.  Unfortunately all the negative propaganda surrounding hallucinogens has this woman more willing to blame the drug than the user.  Anyone can put on a front.  Mushrooms will strip it away to reveal some truth about one's character.

I suggest adding some comments to this story. Follow the link and register, help provide add some accurate information.

Personally, I have to wonder if he was really on just mushrooms. I've read that sometimes mushrooms are laced with PCP, which it seems might be more likely to elicit this kind of response.

Or maybe he was a very angry, violent person to begin with and had only a very small amount of mushrooms, as a typical dose leaves you quite uncoordinated and disorganized. I just can't imagine someone being able to carry this out, even if they wanted to, in a full-blown mushroom trip.

And what the hell is a 15 year old girl doing at a drug party with an 18 year old boy from a polygamous community, with easy access to a gun? The parents need to take some responsibility for permitting the conditions that allowed this to happen.

If I'm remembering right, Utah has a law that prohibits drug use from being used as a defense in a murder trial, so hopefully that will save us from the "mushrooms made me do it" drama.

Laced shrooms could be a good explanation. I bet they didn't test him for anything else, just took everyone's word on the shrooms and disregarded possible PCP or a line of blow off the bathroom mirror.

I hear of that shit all the time. There is one person i knew that just got charged for drinking when we only had two beers but was smoking pot and doing vicodin. He wasn't doing anything wrong but in a murder case, those facts and tests are very important!

Don't want shrooms taking heat for PCP ya know?

Is anyone willing to entertain the possibility that the mushrooms really did make him flip out and do something he never would have done otherwise?

I'm 63 and I have been at many parties with people of all ages and shrooms were used by many. so there is nothing wrong with her being at a party.

And one last note.

There are approx more than 2,000,00 teenage girls between 15 and 18 who date boys two to three years older than them, so that is common in America.

I think Parents are partialy to blame when this kind of horrible mightmare happens to a family and they immediately blame the drug.

Moreso in several European countries.

mj

Polygamy also probably had nothing to do with it. the kid was crazy to begin with most likely.

What people miss is the subtle, but significant, difference between a crime committed while on a drug, and a crime caused by a drug.

More likely, people who are going to commit inexcusable crimes take drugs so that they can plead temporary insanity if/when they're caught.

very likely. Ive seen people flip on on shrooms and do things to hurt people they love. Those people shouldnt have been on shrooms in the first place, IMO, but they were. Bad things can happen on drugs, just like with alcohol, or just like sober. People flip out sometimes and do stupid shit. Having a gun readily accessible while tripping is NEVER a good idea. I have my CCW permit, but if I am tripping my gun is put up far away, it is locked, and the keys are then taken to another location. Its not that I dont trust myself with a firearm, but why even allow the "oppertunity" to present itself?

Stupidity, ill preperation, and bad parenting (what the hell is your 15yo daughter doing out partying with audlts? At that age you should know what your child is doing)...is what killed that girl, and ruined the life of her boyfriend.

Sadly, he will be much better off blaming it all on the mushrooms and then accepting whatever sentence they hand down...further propagating the lies surrounding mushrooms and hallucinogens.

Well, when you tell the story this way, "ducking girl" becomes one more thing to blame besides saintly little Kara.

And he couldn't of just been a nice guy that happened to have done a lot of mushrooms, and wasn't used to the effects of them, and got scared? I know it's his own fault, but "Anyone can put on a front"? Accidents happen, and as I'm typing this, where-ever he is I'm sure he's crying about what he did. And most likely contemplating suicide

I see two problems here:

a)The kid had access to a gun. Don't give me the bullshit that guns don't kill people, people kill people, because people with guns do occasionally kill people.

b)The kid was unprepared. He was tripping, and did something stupid.

It's still his fault, and not the drug's.

She was a 15 year old freshman ho out doing drugs with the seniors.

This kind of shit is bound to happen when you have jailbait sluts hanging out with polygamous adults with handguns.

Rather obvious results to really bad parenting.

More details here:

A 15-year-old Murray girl who was allegedly killed Saturday by her boyfriend also suffered a sexual assault, according to court documents.

Witnesses told police that Kara Hopkins had been partying with several others at the Willow Cove apartments, near 9300 South and Redwood Road, early Saturday.

About 2 a.m. her boyfriend, Parley Jeffs Dutson, pushed her against a wall, telling her to have sex with him in front of others at the party, according to a search warrant affidavit filed Monday in 3rd District Court.

Hopkins resisted Dutson's advances. He then tried to remove her clothing. When she continued to resist, he pulled a black revolver from his pants and pointed it at her, witnesses told police.

As she tried to hide behind a friend, Dutson shot Hopkins in the back of the head, according to the affidavit. Hopkins fell, her face striking a coffee table, knocking out one of her teeth. Witnesses said Dutson followed her to the floor and continued to try to remove her clothing, the affidavit states.

The victim's mother, Pat Hopkins, told The Tribune on Sunday that Dutson had been high on mushrooms when he allegedly pulled the trigger. Statements to police by at least two boys at the party confirmed her claims, adding that Dutson had also smoked marijuana at that party, according to the affidavit.

Apartment complex security guards were alerted to the incident by witnesses.

The guards entered the apartment and found Hopkins on the floor between the coffee table and the couch, naked from the waist down, her shirt torn open, the affidavit states. A black revolver lay on the kitchen countertop.

Dressed only in a sweatshirt and boxers, Dutson was on the floor in a sexual position near Hopkins.

The guards restrained Dutson, who told them he wanted to rape her ''until she was dead," according to the affidavit.

The guards then tended to Hopkins, who was unconscious and having difficulty breathing, until paramedics arrived.

Hopkins died about midnight Saturday after being removed from life support.

Dutson was booked into the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of the attempted murder charge, which prosecutors say they plan to change to murder.

Dutson had known Kara Hopkins for about two years, according to Pat Hopkins.

Officers serving the search warrant removed several items from the apartment, including a black handgun, clothing, cell phones, suspected marijuana and drug paraphernalia, according to the warrant. Dutson is a son of Bygnal Dutson, a Colorado City Town Council member and owner of the Vermillion Deli and Candy Shoppe in Colorado City, Ariz.

The town, along with Hildale, is the homebase of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Dutson left the community a couple years ago, apparently one of many cut off by the sect for perceived misbehavior.

Psychedelics are not for everyone. They can bring out the best, or the worst in someone, depending on what's there.
