yeah many of you probly have heard the aquatic ape theory for human evolution for those of you who havent http://www.primitivism.com/aquatic-ape.htm but to me this presents itself as a very likely explanation. the theory contains many good points but look at our nose compared with the nose of a chimp notice how the nostrils openrelatively downward which would be a useful adaptation for life in the water as the water would not travel up the nose while submersed

I think chimp noses are easier to snack from.

No, the human nose isn't made for water breathing, nor is it made out of a nose for the water. A water nose is one with close-able flaps that close when under water. Like this:

To get a human nose from a chimp's, you only really have to push back the lower jaw. Then their nose stands out much like a human.

Lots of arbitrary details are used to hypothesize about (and simply reinFORCE) the doctrine of evolution.
There is no deductive, scientific method for attributing such "genetic" factors to evolutionary necessity. Thus, it is philosophy, but scientists' words weigh so much, so we trust them. We then turn their words into pub chat, or prove-the-person-you-don't-like-wrong chat.
People want news and entertainment and without the aging, contested, theory of evolution, there would be nothing to sell on the Discovery Channel or in pop-science magazines. ...there would be nothing interesting to scientifically reinforce our bigotry, racism, etc with.

the human nose is longer than a chimps because we adapted to colder environments. Humans (i.e. neanderthals) who migrated northe of Africa required more of a barrier between their lungs and the elements. Breathing air through a larger nose warms it up before entering the body. Perhaps this is also why true Africans have such flat noses.
ever seen a chimp in the snow?
edit: sorry to answer your question on teh first page. i know you guys wanted to argue evolution fallacies until the sun came up. oh well.

Yeah all it really takes to move under water is just cutting off the nostril/lung flap. True, the human nose is different from that of apes, but I believe that to be due to aesthetic mating purposes.
BTW. Happy birthday Trendal :-) How many rings you got around ur trunk?

Look at Paul JR from American Chopper, he has a rather monkey-like nose - still, not full on monkey, but the nostrils kind of flair upwards, as if he didnt quite fully evolve :P

If we evolved from the apes, why are they still here?
If we evolved from the same animal, why are we so unlike?
Water apes vs. Land apes..

Those are the deepest thoughts I can offer you on my nose.

Well, you have to remember that we didn't evolve as 90-100% aquatic creatures like the animal you have pictured there. We were just intimately associated with waterways. And the difference you mention between a chimp and a human is exactly what evolution did to us to give us a better ability to dunk underwater.

Umm, we didn't evolve from neanderthals. They were a completely different homonid species that we lived concurrently with for a long time. There are actually something like 10 completely different homonid species that are not ancestors of Homosapiens.
