Store offered rock cocaine, crack pipes
OAKLAND _ A West Oakland store that had more than food and discount items in its inventory was raided by police Thursday who said rock cocaine and crack pipes were its main sales.
Police found a small amount of rock cocaine at the J&A Bargain Center, 2635 San Pablo Ave., as well as brand new crack pipes, more than $5,000 in cash and packaging materials, authorities said.
Arrested on suspicion of cocaine for sale were the owner, Joseph Downing, 39, who also lived there, and Amelia Fernandez, 54, of Alameda. Police said said she was Downing's business partner and knew what he was doing with the cocaine.
Crime Reduction Team 2 Officers John Koster and William Brown, who led the raid, said Downing kept telling them they had made a ``good arrest'' but refused to talk to them any further.
The 1 p.m. raid was the result of police obtaining a search warrant after a several-week long investigation that included surveillance and one undercover buy of cocaine at the store.
The officers first heard about the store through street sources. The store offered discount food, cigarettes, household goods and even knit baby caps, but the large volume of customers led police to realize that ``after awhile it was no secret what the store was selling,'' Brown said.
Police said based on Downing's appearance, they suspect he was using some of his own illegal products. Koster said most of the cocaine was sold over a counter that was enclosed in a metal cage. The officers said the sales ranged from $10 rocks to half-ounces that sold for at least $200.
The store was usually open at least 10 hours a day, police said.
Police problem solving officers are going to continue their investigation, which could result in the business being closed permanently.

Um...pretty sure any local gas around here sells rose tube aka crack pipes. Do they have these other places? Just little fake roses that come in a glass tube. You take out the rose, and you have a crack pipe...and for some reason there is even a carb built into the rose tube (yea i dont know what the intended purpose of putting a carb in a rose tube is for lol)

Yes, those are common at gas stations around the mid-south as well.

I know downtown here there are more than a few gas stations and convenient stores that will sell you either a glass stem or tire guage along with a little bit of chore boy copper pad for $5.
Never heard of any anctually pushing the rocks though, as usually there were enough folk outside the store doing that.
