Are you on antidepressants?
You may choose only one
Yes
No, but I am depressed

I was thinking mostly of prescription meds, but if you take 5-htp and feel "down" without it, then I would call it an antidepressant.

I took them once, and was surprised the doctor had prescribed them for me, since my depression was caused by events in my life(my girlfriend breaking up with me) rather than some chemical imbalance. I don't think I'll ever use them again.

Used to be. Then I left the situation that was making me depressed... a shitty college. I ran out of refills one month and decided that I was just not going to bother calling the doctor for more refills. Best decision I've ever made. I can actually feel the extremes of being happy or sad, it's not a gray emotionless haze anymore. And I became artsy again after coming off of them. Wewt

I hate the stuff. Most that I'd do is tryptophan, but usually when I'm depressed I dislike taking it. I dislike everything then.

I am depressed often, but for short periods only.

When I was younger I had a severe depression that lasted for about a year and a half. Those were very hard days, and I pondered the idea of asking the doctor for an SSRI, but never did.
One day I was so tired of being constantly depressed that I gradually grew out of it. I smoked a lot of pot too back then and that wasn't really constructive for getting out a depression.

Funny thing is, Gumby, the gray emotional haze you mention is how I feel every day now. I thought it was just a result of me getting older, when younger I used to be much more extreme in my moods and feelings.

Relationships can take a lot of that out of a man I'd guess.

I've been on a variety of antidepressants for a number of years. I'm sorry to hear stories predicated on the improper use of these medications, because they can be quite helpful if they are prescribed with comprehensive therapeutic oversight. It really infuriates that doctors unlearned in the field of psychology can prescribe mind-altering drugs. It also blows my mind that these drugs are advertised to the public. Therapy should (almost) always come first. Relying exclusively on the biological or medical model of mental disorders--in which these disorders are regarded as diseases--is incomplete and irresponsible.

I'm pretty confident I'd be dead now without the benefit of excellent therapy combined with medication.

I'm not, nor have i ever been on them. I have been told by a drug pushing doctor that i need them though. I had to laugh and turn them down.

I've even seen Prozac advertised for pets. They gave it to a parrot that was spending its life in a little cage, and it was plucking its feathers out.

I once met a couple who gave, on doctors order, a SSRI antidepressant to their cat, because they lived in the city in an appartement and the cat was unhappy because he couldn't go out.

Talk about abuse...

Yea. They work. But I hate the fact that I'm on them because I know the only reason I feel so positive and self-motivated is because of a crutch I am using.

I can get along without them, but I just feel so much better with them.

I have a big bad history of depression and was diagonsed with typical schizophrenia. (Which is where the disorder is not chronic and only lasts for a period of months.)

Talk about a trip! lol
