some friends outside of san antonio picked several mushrooms from cow patties. i've heard that if a mushroom is growing from cow dung it's the right kind to trip on. could this be true?

not even remotely accurate, not safe. the only way to identify mushrooms is to identify every given collection to species; a proccess requiring detailed observation of many characteristics, starting with the color of spores in deposite, the basic anatomy of the specimen[s] (as in, gilled mushroom or toothed/pored, stalk present or not, stalk central or not, and then progressing to other details which help to narrow the possible placement untill you have narrowed it down to a single species (in most cases).

eating mushrooms not properly identified can, in many circumstances, lead to a slow, expensive and painfull death.

don't get me wrong; it's not quite as dificult as it sounds, and when done properly and cautiously it's not verry dangerous, but a mistake is too serious not to be thorough.
