Pedro Problems

Something strange is happening to my San Pedro, and I've never seen this on any of my other cacti. Here are some pictures:
 And:

The discolored areas seem to have the same strength as the rest of the cactus, and aren't spongey at all. It's also taken the space of about 4 months for the discoloration to spread as far as it has, and it doesn't seem to be spreading any more.
Any ideas?

looks like a root to me, weird that its that high up, but a root none the less...dont worry about it
peace
edit: or cut a couple inches below it, let it callus, and plant, evidently it wants to root there, then you have two cacti

Yeah, I originally thought that the thing was going to be an offshoot, but then it just kept growing downwards and getting more root-like.
I guess that would mean the discoloration surrounding it is the start of the same callous that forms on a cutting beneath the soil line. That is one confused San Pedro. Confused and ugly.
Thanks for the help!
[Edit]: Now that I think about it, I tried using a small amount of rooting compound when I planted the cactus as I don't intend to eat it. I only gave a very small treatment to the bottom of the cactus, but, still, that's probably the culprit.

Ah, an aerial root. A quick search revealed that
Quote:
Rainforest cacti often have aerial roots that can collect water all the time when it rains (and it rains very often in South American forests).
Maybe it wants to be watered more?

I've only watered it once all winter to prevent etiolation. That was probably a little too extreme.

offshoots only come out of where the spines are. any pimple that you see enlargeing is most likely a root. your pic is the advanced stages of a root. water more. it would also make a good quick cut.

Water isn't what you want to focus on to avoid etiolation. You want to keep it cold to prevent it. The heat will indicate whether the cactus should grow or not, and have an impact on whether or not it absorbs that water you threw in there. If it's dormant, you're risking root rot. If it's not dormant, due to it being warm enough, the amount of sunlight will be the primary factor in whether or not it etoliates. Though nutrients and water are important too, you'll generally notice discoloration and ribs sucking in first of all.
If the cactus is warm, without proper sunlight, and getting water, it's taking in the water but it will etiolate.
If the cactus is cold, without proper sunlight, and getting water, it's not going to etiolate, but the roots may rot.
