none of the variegated ones root stocks died. but all the root stocks i have had die are due to rot. actually they often don't die they just rot at the join and i throw them away.

You probably can alter the soil conditions to save the rootstock.
what is the pH in your soil?

here are a couple, i will take more pics soon.
the double header i took off and an rooting....about 4 cm wide by 2.5.
the koehresii about 9 cm
and some peruvianus....this was from one seed. i also have a 2cm wide by 4 cm tall rooted cutting from this one seed...about 6 months and 4 plants.

man you do some great and inspiring work im very new to cacti cultivation. I have 3 little cuttings im working with now. But your grafting work is amazing.
