Thanks again for one of your unique contributions for growing mushrooms cheap, once spring comes I think I will attempt some of your trenches here in Michigan. I'm in the city, but I have access to some vacant lots that I could experiment on. I'm always interested in learning about ways to grow mushrooms without all the expensive climate controlled grow room equipment.

So, you've grown shiitakes in the open field (and not just under a tree canopy), and that worked out okay for you?

Thanks.

More funny HAAAA Micoloco = crazy monkey in spanish.

Jlocker85 :So, you've grown shiitake in the open field (and not just under a tree canopy), and that worked out okay for you? Ho yes sir, if you do well you'll get mush for at least 3 months for your family with 5 blocks. The worst with shiitake is fighting the slugs.
Few simple strategies can be adopt. The same for green mold (specially after second flush).

This was my idea when I experimented:
When you wet, you wet the ground and the long herbs cover. You wet with cold water. It cools down the temp in the trench, the earth is humid so creating a humid and cool environment and protected by a humid but good breathing shade cover helping to keep a good growing environment.
Adopting the strain for the season will help you doing better.

Phalcon005: If the grass water staining the mushrooms bothered anyone, I wonder if something like some thin cloth would suffice? I'd be surprise. Because at the sun in summer sunlight goes easily up to 70000 lux and I don't think your thin cloth will have the properties to cut light down to the most 2200 lux and well breath at the same time.

Micoloco, how low do temps have to get before you stop operating the trenches? I'm wondering if they retain a little more heat being underground, and if you can squeeze in a later and earlier grow season.
HAAAAAAAAAa aaaa Micoloco!!!! Que grasioso, This year I'm trying a new cold temp strain shiitake.
The temp is now between -5 to 10C, and they still grow!!!!!!!
I'll call them "The Ice Shiitake". They are hard like a rock in the morning. They grow slow but I still have some. They are very good, smaller and very ferm. The wide temp strain not producing in those conditions.

Have fun guys HHHHaaaaaaaaaa Micoloco4umaybe !!!!!111 What shrooms can do to you????

I'm going to come back this year with new experimental and more sophysticated trenches. My web site is now finished in french, I'm starting the english part today. I'll maybe need you to make english language corrections. Have fun, find the errors. Thanks and enjoy life while you're in good shape.
