Birthing Questions...
    #6632313 - 03/03/07 05:58 PM (5 years, 2 months ago)

I have eight jars that were inoculated about 17 days ago on Valentine's Day.  Four of them were fully colonized about four days ago and the other four about a day or two ago.  Since these are going to be converted to cases I'm thinking their pretty much done, right?

The condensation on the inside of the jars appears to move when tapped giving me a clue that the mycelium has shrunk the cake a little bit but I can't say that it's 100% from from all portions of the jars though...

I'm just nervous of premature birth, yea know... :stars:

Keep in mind that inoculating or whatever in front of a flow hood won't help your bad substrate, your bad inoculant, your bad sterile procedure, etc. etc. etc. It's not a +3 flowhood of magic, it's just a tool.

I should mention that I did search for all related threads but there were several guidelines. 2-3 days after initial full colonizations, a week, after pinning starts, etc. etc. etc. I can't figure out which would work best for me since I'm casing them...

I'd give it about 2 more days just to be safe on the last jars and the birth them all at once. You don't want them pinning in the jars if you're gonna be casing them anyway.

I probably will, I'm in no hurry, however I should mention that only four of the eight jars will be cased. The other four are going to be fruited as cakes.  Originally the idea was to see if a 40% dulited coffee solution added to the water used to hydrate the jars would effect growth, so I did that to half the jars with the other half distilled water as a control.

Then I realized that none of makes any difference since the ultimate control (not using a multispore inoculation) was skipped... but I still think it would be fun to let the experiment run it's course.

I prefer to leave them for a week after colonization, especially the ones you plant to fruit as cakes. This gives them time to consolidate their hold on the substrate while still in the clean confines of the jar where they're also not drying out. If you birth right at full colonization, they won't fruit for a week to ten days anyway. If you leave them for an extra week, then birth, dunk and roll, you'll probably see pins within 48 to 72 hours.

Rock on, I totally appreciate all the solid feedback. I'll wait until tomorrow night to start on the four jars that were "fastest" and leave the rest until they've reached their extra week's worth of incubation as you suggested. That should also be pretty much inline of when the casings would be ready to be fruited as well. Well, the cakes will probably come out a day or two early in all honest (rough estimations).
