Cool, weird, edible ?

Hi,
I'm already well aware thanks to the site FAQ on the site of whether or not actives grow in Ontario, but I was wondering if there were any resources I could be pointed towards on what cool, interesting or edible fungi grow in Ontario, or south-central Canada if you prefer. I'm not looking for specific locations or anything, just some kind of site with information or some species name to track down the evironment and conditions myself.

There's only one reliable way: go out and see what you find. Sounds lame, but in my experience, little resources are available that give a comprehensive overview of the species of a specific location. The other way around is much more common; most guides list the geographic distribution of species.

Koraks is right. There are few mushroom guides which list species for a very specific region.

I can understand where you're coming from, but Ontario spans a ton of space, would that really be considered a 'very specific region' ?

Species lists for Toronto mushroom club.
And a good book for your area is Mushrooms of Northeastern North America by Allan E. Bessette, Arleen R. Bessette and David W. Fisher.
Also check out the web sites of clubs in neighboring Provence's and the northern states in the east. The climates are enough alike for there to be a lot of overlap of what kind of mushroom will be found.

613...and one other lol...I live in Ontario too. There's a lot of interesting and edible mushrooms here, actives are harder to find, but there are some like Pan.Subs and p.Salicinus. As for edibles, the most abundant finds I've had are with Oysters, Sidewalk mushrooms (Agaricus bitorquis) , field mushrooms (another agaricus), Hermicium, and giant puffballs. There's also a bunch of other different edible Agaricus species, Lepiotas, boletes, morels, chanterelles, and lactarious species, but those are harder to find and/or Identify.
What area are you in, I'm in the 519.

I'm in the 705. I've only been out a couple times to peek around at the end of fall, but that's awesome to hear about all of those in Ontario. I hope to do some serious huntin this spring through fall.
