    #6616468 - 02/27/07 10:57 AM (5 years, 2 months ago)

Thought I was gonna chew out Agar didn't you? Fooled you didn't I?

WTF am I supposed to do with this?

I got three pounds of dried seaweed @ $10 a pound. Twice that and I could have had them powder it for me!!

I did some research.

You're supposed to PC it in water that is 15-20 times the dry weight of the seaweed. So to process 1lb of seaweed. I need to add 15 to 20lbs of water. BTW, How much does a gallon of water weigh?

After that. I have to strain it and let it harden, freeze then rinse.

Holy shiite!!

So about 2.5 gallons of water should do it per pound of seaweed.

This will be interesting....

Lets not be negative, I think this is a great find.

You could grind that 'weed down as much as possible and then pc small amounts with an appropriate amount of water in whatever size jars you got. Fill er up, PC, rinse and repeat.

WELLLLLLL worth the savings.

You'll prolly need to dry it out. Maybe a dehydrator with a solid tray (like the add ins they used to advertise so you make your own 'fruit roll ups').

Prolly simmer down as much as you can first, of course. Turn it to sludge.

I'd like to try this, gotta link to a source?

This is the stuff the local Oriental market carries.
What you have there is RAW material.

if u need to dry it out and don't want to fork out for a dehydrator, just put it in your closet w/ your heater u use for incubating.

You can use that stuff as a substrate ingredient, but it's not useful for petri dishes.

Ok....

It has been a busy day but we had some fun with it. My wife was bored so she pitched in to help.

Using a PC under pressure was out of the question. A pillowcase probably would have worked out good. Maybe next time.

The yield was about four gallons. Literature suggests that this liquid should be 1% agar in solution. I could have kept going but I ran out of containers. Next time I will have to use 5 gallon buckets.

I bought agar like that some years ago, and turned it to a coarse "powder" in a food processor. Apart from the resulting gel being discolored and the lowish gel strength, it worked fine for petri dishes.

At the moment I am doing a low tech method to further refine and clarify the agar solution. Basically all I am doing is simmering it on the stove.

The heavier particulates that escaped the sieve settle to the bottom. Lighter ones (scum) float to the top and deposit themselves on the sides of the pot as the volume of water is reduced. If the scum layer gets too thick you can manually remove it with a slotted spoon.

Once the volume of water has been reduced by half. I should have a 2% solution of agar.

Nighttime temps around here have been below freezing while the daytime temps are above. These are perfect conditions to use the freeze/thaw cycle of de-watering the agar. As the agar freezes, it contracts and squeezes out the excess water. The ice is manually removed from the surface in the morning.

I don't know how many cycles it will take or how long the weather will cooperate. If worse comes to worse, or I want to speed up the process. I can always stake out a piece of real estate in the freezer.

By using the freeze/thaw method of de-watering I should end up with a material solid enough to handle. At that point I plan to use my vacuum chamber to remove the remaining water.

I don't plan on any additional processing steps.

You'll need to add malt and yeast or some other nutrient solution such as potato broth. The agar is just the gelling agent.
