Quote:
NEW YORK (CNN) -- We're fighting a war that is inflicting even greater casualties than the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and, incredibly, costing even more money. We're losing the War on Drugs, and we've been in retreat for three decades.
Not a bad article and it's a short read. I wasn't aware that the number of drug overdoses have increased as much as they have. Anyway, it is refreshing to hear someone from the MSM is speaking out against it.

I don't know if you realize it, but at the end Dobbs:
Whatever course we follow in prosecuting other wars, we must commit ourselves as members of this great society to only one option in the War on Drugs -- victory.
In other words, he is using the failures to justify further escalating the war, not a stop to it.

I agree we need to win the war on drugs but that means we need to re-evaluate what we have classified as illegal and legal drugs. what makes up the criteria for placing each drug into a certain catagory. also taking a long hard look at what the reality of drug use is in this country and not generalize.
To me the war on drugs has failed because of misplaced priorities. non violent drug offenders crowd prisons and marijuana use makes up the majority of illegal drug use. Most studies say merijuana is no more harmful than alcohol yet it is still a controlled substance. If the amount of money within the drug war that was spent tryng to stop the use of marijuana was used to stop the use of meth, cocaine, and heroin we would see overdoses decrease. As well as a massive decrease in the amount that needs to be spent every year because people can actually be persuaded to not do addictive harmful drugs. Marijuana which most of the money is spent trying to stop is neither addictive or harmful which is why we can't convince anyone to stop using it.
However until the leaders we elect realize that marijuana shouldn't be controlled we will continue to see the inflated numbers that dobbs presents. Simplying legalizing marijuana could create a number of very influential effects on the statistics relating to the war on drugs. When a drug becomes legal the government has a great deal of oversight as to how that drug reaches the consumer, since marijuana is illegal use is uncontrollable except by arrests/tickets. If legalized it would be similar to alcohol and while teens are still able to obtain alcohol and tobacco underage they do so in far fewer numbers than with marijuana.

I saw the Dobs report, and he is definitely for stopping drug use. he ties drug use to immigration, and thats a whole 'nother problem. A few years ago, and pardon me if i cant remember the exact name, there was a History Channel show on Drugs - and they featured a specific drug each night. I gleaned from watching this, and I'm sure most of you know, drug laws are racially motivated, and were originally instituted to stop what ever immigrant du jour was trafficking said drug. I.e Mexicans were flooding into America, so MJ is illegal. Opium/Chinese - Etc. In the early part of the 20th century, a kid could run to the general store and pick up a pound of sugar and a bottle of morphine for his mothers "vapors". Since the ruling class (read whites) were in control of the heroin, at the time, morphine was legal, and a safe drug to treat a myriad of malaise. Things are different as to who controls the flow of drugs, so now everything is illegal. Except the two biggest cash cows:Smokes & Booze. If cigarettes kill more people than weed, and Alcohol is a gateway drug - why they are still legal?
I almost wish (almost) the gov't would just start making joints, and selling them in stores like liquor. I mean, if they get their cut, we could all get some. But that causes problems, such as how are they going to keep those jails full. Humm. Might have to tear some down, maybe build a few schools..naw, nevermind.
