Four held on LSD charges
Triangle has first significant appearance of the drug in years

Durham police arrested four people on LSD charges over the weekend, the first major appearance of the psychedelic drug in the Triangle some officers can remember since the Grateful Dead came to town more than a decade ago.

In one of the two incidents, two Orange County men were charged with trafficking after Durham police say they bought 1,000 doses of the drug from them.

In the other incident, two Durham men were charged with possession of a "foil stamp pad" after they called 911 because a Hillsborough girl, 16, was overdosing on unknown drugs, Durham police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said. The girl was in critical condition Monday afternoon, said Michael, who did not return a call for an update Tuesday.

LSD, a hallucinogen, is often grouped with "club" drugs that heighten the senses, though it's not a stimulant like ecstasy, said Dr. Glen R. Hanson, adviser to the National Institute on Drug Addiction.

It often comes on blotter paper like stamps, with perforated edges. Chemists can fashion unique images out of the paper and drugs. The 1,000 doses police nabbed over the weekend looked like a puzzle that made one large picture, said Durham police Lt. L.C. Smith, who oversaw the weekend LSD purchase.

Smith said he didn't know the street value of the LSD seized, but Orange County Sheriff Lindy Pendergrass said doses could sell for $20 to $40 each.

Though it is not known for being addictive, LSD can cause flashbacks, and people can do dangerous things on the drug because it alters one's sense of reality, Hanson said.

Nationally, LSD use peaked during the Vietnam era, then picked up again in the early 1980s and mid-1990s. It dropped after the 2000 bust of a lab in Kansas that the Drug Enforcement Administration think produced much of the LSD in the country at the time. LSD accounted for eight arrests by federal drug agents in 2005, compared to 93 in 2001.

Matt Sullivan, a crisis counselor in the Chapel Hill Police Department, said he has heard more talk about the drug in recent months but doesn't know whether that means more people are using it.

In 2005, just 1.8 percent of 12th graders reported having used LSD in the past year, compared with 33.6 percent who said they had tried marijuana, and 5.1 percent who had tried cocaine, according to the annual Monitoring the Future survey funded by the National Institutes of Health. Five years earlier, 6.6 percent of 12th graders had reported trying LSD.

Part of why experts think LSD has decreased in popularity is that it's difficult to make, especially compared to methamphetamine.

"Usually the manufacturers of LSD are true chemists," said Ruth Porter-Whipple, a DEA spokeswoman in Atlanta. "They have true technical ability. It's not just a recipe you get off the Internet."

Hanson also said LSD's use seems to reflect social unrest. The draft during Vietnam left young people feeling as if they had no control over their lives, so they tried taking it back through drugs.

"You can look at Iraq, engagement in the Middle East, ... and ask the question, 'Will that bring on another bout of interest in using the hallucinogens?' " Hanson said. "I don't know. It may."

It's not a stimulant, huh?  I guess that would explain why I get so sleepy every time I dose Lucy.

I don't think it's a stimulant in the true sense of the word, but it definitely has a stimulative property. I don't really know, it's just a word

Regardless though, the article contains gross inaccuracies.
