Man gets 60-year sentence for meth delivery
February 10, 2007 - dentonrc.com

Jurors handed a 63-year-old Krugerville man a 60-year sentence Thursday after convicting him of his seventh felony narcotics delivery charge in 23 years.

Jerry Wayne Bridges cried when he heard the verdict, said Narcotics Sgt. Jeff Davis with the Denton County Sheriff’s Office.

“I think this jury sent a message that people are fed up with methamphetamines,” Davis said. “They didn’t know when they found him guilty of delivery of a fairly small amount of meth that he had been convicted six other times for the same thing. When they found out in the punishment phase, they gave him what amounts to a life sentence.”

Area narcotics officers had been aware that Bridges sold narcotics at the trailer park he owned off U.S. Highway 377, said sheriff’s Narcotics Lt. David Scott. In the past year, there have been four arrests in the trailer park, but officers had not been able to legally connect the sales to Bridges.

Davis said that in July 2006 the sheriff’s narcotics unit set up a “buy-bust” operation using an informant who had bought methamphetamine from Bridges in the past. Bridges agreed to meet the man in a parking lot in Denton, and was waiting to receive his money when he was arrested with the drugs in his pocket, Davis said.

“He would sell only to people he knew,” Scott said. “The more times you arrest someone, the harder it is to catch them because they learn how to avoid arrest.”

Bridges was sentenced to 25 years in prison on a drug delivery charge in 1994. He was paroled and still had 15 years to serve on that sentence when he was arrested in July, the officers said.

The officers said county prosecutors Ryan Calvert and William Schultz did an outstanding job of convincing the jury that Bridges needed to be off the streets.

It was the second time in a month that the same narcotics officers and prosecutors have won long sentences for drug dealers, said Jamie Beck, first assistant district attorney. In January, Jessie Slaughter was convicted of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and sentenced to 23 years in prison.

“I think jurors are saying, ‘Enough is enough,’” Beck said. “I think they want drug dealers off the streets.”

Beck said Bridges turned down a 15-year sentence in a plea-bargain agreement and asked for a jury trial. The district attorney’s office routinely has a plea bargain on the table in every case, she said.

Scott said the news already is impacting criminals waiting for trial.

“I got a phone call that a guy who wouldn’t take a six-year plea bargain on a drug charge decided to take it when he heard about this sentence,” Scott said. “People who are sort of teetering are deciding to take the deal.”
