Man Arrested for Growing Mushrooms, Marijuana [UT]

Cops raid drug grower’s home near Tooele High
February 1, 2007 - tooeletranscript.com

The Tooele Drug Task Force arrested a 30-year-old Tooele man Wednesday afternoon on suspicion of growing psychedelic mushrooms and marijuana plants in a Drug Free Zone near Tooele High School.

The suspect, Benito Cordova, was taken into custody yesterday at his home at 491 West Vine St. Police and sheriff's detectives confiscated 16 tubs of psychedelic mushrooms in various stages of growth, food dryers filled with mushroom stems, about 30 marijuana plants and a sophisticated hydroponics rig.

Police estimated the cultivated and dried mushrooms could have had a street value of $15,000 to $20,000.

Cordova was arrested on a warrant for cultivation of a controlled substance and possession with the intent to distribute, police said.

Because of the proximity to both Tooele High School and Tooele Junior High, the suspect could face more serious charges. Investigators are not saying if the suspect sold drugs out of his house.

According to Ron Matekel, task force commander and Tooele County sheriff's deputy, the arrest was the culmination of a two-month investigation that began with an anonymous tip.

"Someone called our tip line with some information. We just took it and ran with it," Matekel said.

Inside the tri-level, single-family home the suspect reportedly inherited from his mother, investigators found a growing operation that had the potential for expansion.

There were plants and plant-growing equipment strewn about on two of the three floors, according to Matekel. The home was dark, shielded from natural light, and was littered with debris including beer bottles and bottles of fertilizer.

"You couldn't put your foot down without stepping on evidence," an undercover detective said. "The suspect's phone did not stop ringing the entire time we were there."

Some of the materials confiscated were as innocuous as humidifiers, half-pint Mason jars and heating blankets (used beneath the plants to promote growth). There was also a book titled "Mushroom Cultivator: A Practical Guide to Growing Mushrooms at Home." The book sells on Amazon.com for about $25.

"This is an unusual case for Tooele County," Matekel said, adding that he could not think of another where such a large amount of psychedelic mushrooms were being farmed in the Valley.

In addition to the plants and drug paraphernalia, police also confiscated four weapons: two .22-caliber rifles, a .30-06 rifle and a .35-caliber pistol.

The Tooele Drug Task Force is still investigating leads they gathered from having the suspect's home under video surveillance for two months. They have also obtained the suspect's cell phone.

[...and was littered with debris including beer bottles...]

Based on my beliefs & experience, the alcohol was the worst thing in the home. What a flock of gullible & self-righteous sheep who don't give a second thought towards alcohol, but are perfectly content throwing people into the hellholes of prison & breaking apart families over natural plants & fungus; essential components of healthy ecosystems which hold so much redeeming value for humanity, both in terms of practical utilization, as well as spiritual enlightenment.

Every part of this country is sacred to my people. Every hillside, every valley, every plain and grove has been hallowed by some fond memory or some sad experience of my tribe.

Even the rocks... as they swelter in the sun along the silent seashore in solemn grandeur thrill with memories of past events... and the very dust under your feet responds more lovingly to our footsteps than to yours, because it is the ashes of our ancestors, and our bare feet are conscious of the sympathetic touch, for the soil is rich with the life of our kindred.

And when the last red man shall have perished from the earth and his memory among white men shall have become a myth, these shores shall swarm with the invisible dead of my tribe.

Hmm, arrested for growing a weed and a fungus that grows mostly in cow shit. Too bad for the guy, hes lookin at a long prison term and hefty fines.

For the marijuana alone (not growing) he's looking at at least 5 years with a fine of $5000 dollars, but since it was within a school-zone (drug free zone) he automatically gets increased time and fine.

Doesn't that drug free zone deal instantly set him up for a felony, since he got intention to distribute?

Shame to lose 20 k (or so they say) worth of mushrooms.

Seems to me his problem was that he was too well known. They said his phone was ringing nearly full time while they were investigating, plus he was busted on an anonymous tip. If you're going to grow, please don't tell highschool kids about it. Please.

He's definately got a felony because in Utah they don't fuck around I think it's the only state in the US where simple MJ possession is a felony offence.

Strange that they would mention the book by name. Normally news articles say something along the line of, "Mushroom cultivating literature was found in the home." Then they mention a website where it is sold.

Perhaps it's nothing. But given the fascist police-state mentality of the criminal regime in Washington D.C., and there enthusiastic willingness to violate the Constitution, drastically weaken checks & balances by consolidating power in the executive branch, accusing those in other branches of government who either oppose or have reservation about such a power grab & its abuse as "giving comfort to the enemy", refering to every dissenting opinion as "emboldening the enemy" blatantly disregard civil liberties by suspending habeas corpus & conducting illegal raids, searches & seizures, sending illegally detained individuals overseas to be tortured by a U.S. puppet regimes (or by U.S. military personnel, private contractors, & C.I.A. agents at Guantanamo), publically admitting & embracing torture while calling those whose oppose it "enemy collaborators", wiretap the phones & moniter e-mails of political opposition, use anti-terrorism task for officers to infiltrate peace organizations, send FBI agents to the homes of individuals whose acquaintances reported them to the Feds for making statements against war & war profiteering, giving out multi-million dollar contracts to business partners (i.e. Halliburton) to build concentration camps under the guise of illegal immigrant detention facilities, sending uninterrupted military & economic aid to the imperialist state of Israel to both terrorize, maim, & murder civilains in Lebanon, while conducted the same terrorism against Palestinian civilians in setting up an apartheid society as bad, if not worse, than South Africa, instigating two wars of criminal aggression in violation of the U.S. Constitution, the Geneva Conventions, & every other international treaty while simultaneously bankrupting the country with enormous deficits that are being financed by east Asian countries, & attempting to start a third, even more disaterous entanglement... I wouldn't put it past such a regime to further descend into fascism by undertaking a massive effort to use financial records & purchases to round up & illegally detain "subversives" who threaten "the American way of life" and are "aiding the enemy". One more conveniently-timed "terrorist attack" would give this regime the cover they need to fully implement what has already been outlined in the Project for a New American Century for nearly a decade.

I sincerely hope I am wrong.

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger." - Hermann Goering, testifying at the Nuremberg Trials

And that's to say nothing about the so-called "War on Drugs"... a propaganda hoax every bit as much as the "War on Terror"; designed not for any noble or sincere purpose, but rather to keep gullible, uncritical people from actually having to think.

"It's not a matter or whether the war is not real, or if it is. Victory is not possible. The war is not meant to be won, it is meant to be continuous. Hierarchical society is only possible on the basis of poverty and ignorance. This new version is the past and no different past can ever have existed. In principle the war effort is always planned to keep society on the brink of starvation. The war is waged by the ruling group against its own subjects and its object is not the victory over either Eurasia or East Asia, but to keep the very structure of society intact." - George Orwell

[He's definately got a felony because in Utah they don't fuck around I think it's the only state in the US where simple MJ possession is a felony offence.]

What about Nevada? I know that state's horrible for drug laws as well (it & Minnesota being the two worst states in the U.S. to be caught growing psilocybin-containing mushrooms, I believe). What a backwards place. Gambling & prostitution, perfectly legal. Plants & fungus, a felony & likely many, many years behind bars. But it's not just Nevada, obviously. In many jurisdictions you'd be better off molesting a young child than cultivating psychedelic mushrooms. What a strange & unjust society so many enslaved sheep are content living in. Only knowledge can emancipate the ignorant.

"Most people prefer to believe their leaders are just and fair even in the face of evidence to the contrary, because once a citizen acknowledges that the government under which they live is lying and corrupt, the citizen has to choose what he or she will do about it. To take action in the face of a corrupt government entails risks of harm to life and loved ones. To choose to do nothing is to surrender one's self-image of standing for principles. Most people do not have the courage to face that choice. Hence, most propaganda is not designed to fool the critical thinker but only to give moral cowards an excuse not to think at all." - Michael Rivero

"I'm for truth, no matter who tells it. I'm for justice, no matter who it's for or against." - Malcolm X

*update with video...

Police Find Home Filled with Illegal Mushrooms and Marijuana
February 5, 2007 - ksl.com

Natasha Adkins, Neighbor: "With all the traffic, I assumed something was going on. But I didn't know exactly what."

When cops entered a home in Tooele, they expected to find just a few baggies of drugs. They didn't expect to find what this man had set up throughout the house.

Mike Hansen, Commander, Tooele County Drug Task Force: "I think we were all shocked with what we found in the house."

Following that bust last week, detectives in Tooele realized they may have discovered the biggest and most elaborate illegal mushroom operation ever in Utah history. Drug agents seized more than 200 pounds of mushrooms. They're concerned because it was just a short walk from two schools.

The mushrooms, marijuana, and equipment seized in the raid are now here in the Tooele Police evidence room. Investigators say the indoor agricultural operation they discovered was surprising and alarming.

For a long time neighbors suspected something was up in the house behind the iron fence.

Natasha Adkins, Neighbor: "There's been a lot of traffic late at night, especially late at night, cars coming and going, people coming and going."

Police got an anonymous phone tip two months ago, but even after a lengthy investigation, they were surprised when they finally raided the house.

Sgt. Todd Hewitt, Tooele County Drug Task Force: "Yeah, it was alarming, what we found."

In tubs and pots and bottles and boxes, they found a marijuana- and mushroom-growing operation spread throughout the house.

Sgt. Todd Hewitt, Tooele County Drug Task Force: "Every room, every inch of the house, seemed to contain some aspect of that. There was very little area that wasn't covered with evidence."

The mushrooms are a species that naturally contain psilocybin, a powerful hallucinogenic chemical.

Sgt. Todd Hewitt: "It causes the hallucinations similar to what you would expect, I would imagine, with L.S.D."

There were elaborate homemade holders for pots. They were set up to deliver bottled spring water. Marijuana plants and mushrooms were irrigated, heated, ventilated, and dehydrated.

Thirty-year-old Benito Cordova was booked into the Tooele County Jail.

Mike Hansen, Commander, Tooele County Drug Task Force: "I believe he was earning his living from it."

Will Adkins, Neighbor: "I didn't ever notice that he ever went to work. So I kind of had my suspicions in that way."

Investigators believe the operation was so big that the market for the mushrooms was larger than just the local area. But it is the local area they're most concerned about.

Mike Hansen: "We're very worried, because it was within a thousand feet of both Tooele High School and Tooele Junior High School."

Natasha Adkins: "I didn't see very many younger kids going in there. It was mostly people that looked in their twenties."

Oddly enough, you can go to the internet and order a starter-kit for an illegal mushroom operation. Investigators tell us the mushroom spores themselves are not illegal, but when you start cultivating them, you cross the line into criminal territory.

Fuck, dude, that is some crazy shit. Never seen a news piece like that before. Let's all hope it stays a rare occurance.

[Drug agents seized more than 200 pounds of mushrooms.]

Not sure exactly what that means. It could be the wet weight of all mushrooms growing, which would come out to about 20 pounds... still a very large amount. Maybe they're counting the substrate & casing in the tubs/trays as part of that weight. Crazy story either way.

[Natasha Adkins, Neighbor: "There's been a lot of traffic late at night, especially late at night, cars coming and going, people coming and going." ]

That's just fucking stupid. If you're producing that much weight... of anything... & selling at the same location... to a lot of people on top of that... it's just a matter of time before law enforcement stops by for a visit. This guy may have known how to run the production side of an operation, but he definately could use some schooling on the business side.

[Police got an anonymous phone tip two months ago... ]

If it was an informant, he should start casket shopping, or say their prayers every night that no one connected to the grower ever finds out their identity. But if it was a random neighbor who called due to the all the traffic at the house, then that guy's probably gonna kill himself in prison.
