Cool backpacking and Survival Techniques?
    #6509837 - 01/29/07 10:03 PM (6 years, 4 months ago)

Well 3 more months until my excursion into the westcoast. I'm gonna probably be broke on the trip, so if there are any survival suggestions, trapping foods and such, please share!

Slingshots and blowguns make nice, light weight implements of death if you're planning on having to hunt for food. Great for bagging yourself a cute little squirrel or bunny. I also have a nice collapsible fishing rod that breaks down to the size of a tennis ball and weighs something like 8 oz. I once lived off of fish, blackberries and dandelion greens for a week in Wyoming thanks to that rod and an abundant supply of earth worms. Great fucking investment.

Yeah, that'd be good.  I'm no good at fishing though, I need practice.

Huh? wuh?... people still use this forum?

Nephlyte, I honestly can't remember the name of the place where I got that rod; it was one of the times I came off the AT and sauntered into town for supplies. The name of the thing is "The Slingshot", there was actually a video playing on a little t.v. in the store on how to use it; the idea is to grab the hook/bait, pull back using the very flexible rod and let go; sort of firing it like a slingshot. It's great for casting side-arm underneath branches and piers and whatnot. It was one of things that I couldn't pass up.

DRT: I'm no fisherman either. Not at all.

I've got me another cool little gizmo and that's a reel and line that I can hook up to my hunting bow. The line's attatched to an arrow so that you can stand on a rock or something and shoot down at fish. Not something you'd be carrying around while backpacking but fun none-the-less. Someone told me that this counts as spear fishing which is illegal in some states including here in VA. I don't know the validity of that statement but I'd like to find out.
