Fungi enthusiasts flock to Oregon Truffle Festival

Fungi enthusiasts flock to Oregon Truffle Festival
January 28, 2007 - registerguard.com

That $1,025-per-person package to the Oregon Truffle Festival? Sold out. As was the $925 package, the $525 package and the $425 package. The Grand Truffle Dinner - a relative bargain at $150 per head - also sold out, along with the truffle cultivation seminar and the truffle grower's forum.

The only thing that didn't sell out at the three-day festival is today's Oregon Truffle Marketplace - and that's a pay-at-the-door event.

The festival attracted truffle enthusiasts from across the country, as well as from Canada, Chile, Spain and New Zealand, organizer Charles Lefevre said.

"They're people who just love the idea of truffles, and of going truffle hunting in the woods," he said.

Possibly the only people happier about the across-the-board sellout than the festival organizers are the employees at the Convention & Visitors Association of Lane County Oregon.

"It's very exciting for us," said Lisa Lawton, the association's director of community relations. "We've had culinary (tourism) on the radar for a while now in our niche development. We're putting more effort into promoting it."

Lawton said the festival, which included events at various locations in the county, attracted free-spending visitors from as far away as Washington, D.C.

Tourism officials estimate the three-day event brought $250,000 into the county - and that's not counting those high-priced packages. "This is a high-end audience coming in for this," Lawton said.

The recognition that Eugene and Lane County get from the truffle extravaganza is a big boost, Lawton said.

"Having Eugene and Oregon recognized for this, being held in high regard as a culinary destination, will have a long-lasting impact," she said.

Culinary tourism is a growing tourism market, Lawton said. "Eating has always been paired with travel, but people are looking at it in a new way. It's becoming a destination in and of itself, going to these places and learning about the whole culinary scene."

The festival, now in its second year, is popping up on food and travel Web sites such as Slow Food Forum and What's Cooking in America. It also was featured in AAA's latest travel magazine and other publications in the Northwest.

In addition to the 70 people who bought festival packages, Lawton said, about 50 people will be coming in for seminars and workshops. Media representatives from Oregon and beyond - including one from Mexico -present another opportunity for local tourism promoters, Lawton said. "That's a good opportunity there to market our area."

My mycology class had a "feast" the last day and the professor bought some truffles... well A Truffle, since the truffles were $40 each. We made a sauce out of it and I guess it was a different taste.

I know truffles are really difficult to grow because of they're mycorhizal. If someone could tap into how to make them on a large scale, they'd be ridiculously rich... then again maybe it's good some things man can't get its hands on without nature's time.
