Beer Trade
    #6504373 - 01/28/07 10:07 AM (6 years, 3 months ago)

Anyone want to start a beer trade going? People in different parts of the country can get their hands on different beers, so I thought it would be pretty cool to see if we could trade beers that were hard to get regionally. Also, if you're a homebrewer, we could trade homebrews.

If anyone's interested I've got some Irish red ale I brewed up, that I think turned out extremely well.

Anyone interested post here, let's get this ball a rolling!

I'm in! I don't have much to show bottled right now, except an oatmeal honey stout that needs more aging, and a ginger beer that is too intense for most people. I've got a golden belgian ale and a german alt waiting to be bottled though.

I can get Alesmith, brewed in the same town as Stone but a much smaller company so its hard to find their stuff. In my opinion one of the best beer companies in the world

I'm all for a homebrew trading ring. As for local/ regional bubbly, here in Richmond, VA, we've got Legend and Richbrau which are very small breweries. Legend makes some of the tastiest beer I've ever had. Then we've also got Starr Hill which is a slightly bigger operation that more peole probably know.

I send beer all over the country for various competitions among other reasons and never had a problem. I've never heard of any state that has a ban on alcohol from another.

I haven't heard of their coffee stout, but then again my liquor store doesn't carry everything by them. My personal fave atm is their scottish ale, it's called Robert the Bruce Scottish Ale, and it's under $10 a six pack. That's probably why I get it so much seeing as some of their others go for $9.99 a 22oz.

Anyway, I'm down to trade with whoever, it'd probably be easiest to pm me if you're interested. Then again, maybe we could come up with something like the spore thread where someone offers something, someone replies that they're gonna take it, and something else would then be put up for grabs. I don't know, I'd have to go back and read that thread again.

But.... it's really cool to see so many people interested.
For all you homebrewers, we should start posting recipes also, let's get this train a'rolling!

I'll start with the recipe for my honey oatmeal stout:

6# light malt extract
1.5# Honey
1# british 2-row
1# british munich
3/4# special B
1/2# carafa
1/4# british chocolate
1/4# roasted barley
1/4# flaked barley
1/4# oatmeal, toasted in oven until lightly browned

1 oz kent goldings (60 min)
1/2 oz fuggles (30 min)
1/2 oz fuggles (15 min)

White Labs WLP028 - Edinburgh Scottish Ale Yeast

Steep (preferrably w/o grain bag) at 122 F for 30 minutes (if you skip this part, you'll probably gift anyone who drinks your beer with extra flatulence). Raise temperature to 155 F while stirring vigorously to keep grain from sticking to the bottom. Note: not necessary if you're using a grain bag. I'll admit, this part is a bitch. If you're not in the mood for a workout, use a bag. Cover and let sit off heat for one hour. Strain and sparge grain, or remove grain bag. Return wort to heat and bring to a rolling boil as usual.

Primary ferment until bubbling reduces to about once a minute.
Secondary until yeast drops out completely. Before bottling, make a syrup using 4 oz dextrose and 3/4 c water. Add to secondary, stir well, and bottle.

I bottled this in early december, and it could still use some mellowing out. Very chocolatey taste, with a mild/medium dark chocolate/espresso finish. A bit lighter bodied than most oatmeal stouts, thanks to the honey. I threw in all that special b in hopes of getting some raisin flavors, but I don't think it really came through. If you don't like dark beer, don't make this.

OG: 1.064
FG: 1.018
Should be in the upper 5 to lower 6 percent abv.
