Crumbling Cakes & Casing . . .HOW TO?

I've been doing cakes for months now guys and I keep wasting half my births on trying to crumble and case, I just cant seem to get it right I just don't know a proper procedure to follow while doing this, the ones I did try just left so much grey area for me as far as measurements, I mean I'm a new chem major and I just need some accurate measurements cuz right now I'm going with trail and error and I haven't gotten passed that stage. Can anyone help with a full proof tek for casing things like BRF/VERM to get the best results. Also I understand grains and WBS and other grains produce much bigger and much more fruits but its a person hobby and I don't plan on using anything for anyone but me.
Anybody Help Me?

I don't really know that there's a way to put it in to measurements but heres how I case cakes.
-Birth cakes -Put cakes in a zip lock bag and start to crumble into large chunks (about 1 cubic inch each it doesn't have to be perfect) -Find a pan or Tupperware container that is the size you want to case in. -Pour vermiculite into into the pan so you have a even 1/2 inch layer of vermiculite. -Bake vermiculite in oven for 10 minutes at 400F in a different pan needs to be metal no one wants to clean up melted plastic -Clean the pan/Tupperware container that you are using for your casing with alcohol -After vermiculite is cool add a 1/2 inch layer into your casing pan -Add the crumbled cakes into your casing pan evenly -Add the other 1/4 inch layer of vermiculite to the top of the casing -Cover with aluminum foil -Incubate at 78-83F for a couple days and check to see if your mycelium is poking out yet. -After mycelium is covering most of the vermiculite put in your fruiting chamber.
Enjoy

Well, I'm glad someone else uses the PF tek with the idea of casing it (All though Blutjager will prolly hate it... ) Anyways, here it goes:
The measurments depend on how much spawn your using and then you have to find an exceptable container. For 1 Half-pint, I use about 1/4 to 1/3 cup of verm. I split about 1/4 up and use that for bottom then spawn layer/pf cake, then 3/4's of the verm for top:
|------casing layer-----| | | | | |-----spawn layer-------| | | |-----casing layer------| |_______________________|
So this is the procedure: Take a fully colonized cake and put it into a plastic baggie. Take a fork or some other item and stick it in the bag and chop the cake into the size of whopper candie.
Now take your wetted verm (same wetness as the pf tek calls for) that you microwaved for 1 min. and let cool for about 45 min. and put 1/4 of it on the bottom of the casing container. Now put your crumbled cake ontop of that, trying to keep it as even as possible but it will never really be 100% "even". Then put the rest of the verm on top.
Put a peice of foil of the top and poke holes in it so it can get rid of the C02 it makes so it wont slow growth. Incubate at 75 - 86 degrees farenheit for 3 days. Pull back foil after 3rd day and check to see if myc. is popping through. If it's showing through about 75% if the way, pull some verm from another spot over these spots and take tin off and put in FC. It should start pinning in about 1 week.
Here is Hyphae's pinning strategy that does a good job explaining how to get a nice pinset as well as good strategy's within it for good casing tech.: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/3290155/an/0/page/0
Hope this helps! -HTR
