Anyone ever try this and how did it come out compared to store bought wine?

My uncle and great uncle both make blueberry wine. I'm not sure exactly how, but it's a very good after dinner wine.

I have not but I am ordering a mead-making kit tomorrow. It's what the Vikings and ancient royalty used to drink. This is the first recipe I am going to try which is recommended for beginners as it is said to be foolproof:

Ancient Orange Mead

1 gallon batch

* 3 1/2 lbs Clover or your choice honey or blend (will finish sweet)
* 1 Large orange (later cut in eights or smaller rind and all)
* 1 small handful of raisins (25 if you count but more or less ok)
* 1 stick of cinnamon
* 1 whole clove ( or 2 if you like - these are potent critters)
* optional (a pinch of nutmeg and allspice )( very small )
* 1 teaspoon of Fleishmann’s bread yeast ( now don't get holy on me--- after all this is an ancient mead and that's all we had back then)

The downside to making wine (and mead) is the waiting. It takes months up to a year to make good wine. With beer you only wait weeks. What I like about the recipe I posted is that it's ready in only two months. Trying it before then is supposedly like drinking rocket fuel. :sip:

Made wine from yeast, sugar, water and Redcurrant.. Was really good.. A bit sweeter than store-bought but both a good drink and you got drunk.. Definitely worth it.

Does anyone know if a typical grocery store carries yeast? Specifically, Fleishmann’s bread yeast.

It is fine for this recipe. Thousands of people have made Ancient Orange with no problem whatsoever. In fact it is probably the most popular mead recipe. It is very unorthodox though.

If you won't a high ALCOHOL wine use a mead yeast. Mead yeast can get up to 23% ALCOHOL or 46 poof

The mead yeast is very robust and has a high alcohol tolerance. That means it would tear through the honey and convert all of it to alcohol leaving me with a dry, high alcohol mead that will need to age to smooth out.

The Ancient Orange recipe is meant for a mead that can be drank young which is why I chose it. The bread yeast will die early and leave enough honey for the mead to be sweet. As a beginner I want a recipe that I can make mead from quickly as my first batch.

Not all of the honey will be eating as the yest will kill it self(from the alcohol), before its used up.Liveing you with alot of suger left over, making it very sweet.

If you are afraid it'll be to low sugar content; add more sugar/honey

I know. I want it to be somewhat sweet. People who have made it say it is sweet but not cloying. The orange rinds add some slight bitterness to balance the sweetness nicely. ABV comes in about 15%.

I realize this recipe is very unorthodox and I plan to use more conventional techniques in subsequent batches but this one has been tested by thousands of people and when done by-the-book comes out nice every time.

I every now and again make a batch of distilling wine, which I then still to yield me moonshine vodka of typically 40-55% (80-110 proof)

I typically turn 1 kilo of sugar into 1 liter of 40% vodka :sun:

I can get 6 1/2 gallon buckets of grape juice. Juiced this fall, all kinds of grapes to choose from. The Bucket of juice costs around 40 dollars.
With wine, you can't open it to check it. If you open it up, you let in fresh air and the whole thing oxidizes and the flavour gets f'ed up.

I tried using the recipe in the original post today, except I used 2 gallons of grape juice, and put it in a 5 gallon jug, with 1.5 packets of yeast, and 1 cup of sugar. Its been a good 7 hours and the balloon on top isnt filling up at all.

Is it simply because theres 3 empty gallons in the jug, and the gases are filling the empty space first? or did i screw up?

I guess ill wait a day or two and see whats up.

Advise if yall can.

You can make wine out of anything as long as you have sugar,, yeast and acid... The best wines ive ever made are the ones where ive put alot of effort into them...

That means quality produce and cleanliness..

You can use bread yeast but it's not recommended..

Common mistake people make is trying to make it strong,,, if you put less sugar in you'll end up with something that's weaker but's much more drinkable and you might enjoy it..

best wine i ever made was elderberry and rosehip,,, i swear you could never buy anything like it !
