Drug agents raid seven pot farms in Central Valley suburbs January 12, 2007 - pe.com The Associated Press
Drug agents on Friday raided marijuana farms hidden inside seven homes in fast-growing Central Valley suburbs, sophisticated operations that are part of a trend that gained notice last summer.
The latest raids included six homes in Lathrop and one in nearby Tracy, about 50 miles south of Sacramento.
"They're in nice, upscale neighborhoods, just like the ones we saw in Sacramento and Stockton. ... Next thing they know, they have a marijuana factory next door," said Gordon Taylor, who heads the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's Central Valley office.
Last summer, authorities discovered 21 of the homes in Sacramento and neighboring Elk Grove. Another 20 homes were discovered in the Stockton area about 40 miles south of the state capital.
All 48 houses appear to be linked to a San Francisco-based organized crime syndicate, Taylor said.
"We do believe it's the same root organization, perhaps different cells," he said.
In each case, the growers bought homes for between $400,000 and $600,000, most in subdivisions that were new or just a few years old.
They installed extensive growing systems that included heat lamps and irrigation pipes, as well as ventilation and air filtration systems. Agents say the growing systems alone cost tens of thousands of dollars.
Agents, tipped off by neighborhood residents, found 4,931 plants at the seven homes raided Friday. Taylor estimated each house was capable of producing four crops a year, with an annual value for all seven of nearly $20 million.
Agents arrested Rui Yao Yu, 53, of Sunnyvale, at one of the Lathrop homes, Taylor said. Three others were arrested at an Oakland residence where Taylor said agents found about five pounds of processed marijuana and 500 Ecstasy pills. He identified them as Kevin Tran, 47, and Wei Keng Lam, 41, of Oakland, and Wei Jie Ma, 37, of San Francisco.
Two other San Francisco homes also were searched Friday, including Ma's home near Chinatown.
Five people face federal charges in connection with the raids last summer.
Statewide, 196,994 indoor marijuana plants were seized last year, up from 98,595 plants in 2005 and 54,659 in 2004.
"It's almost quadrupled in just three years. That's a scary statistic," Taylor said.
By comparison, authorities in California seized nearly 1.7 million plants from outdoor groves in 2006, triple the amount from the previous year.

so they seized almost 3 times as many plants last year as the year before. what effect did this have on pot prices or use? oh that's right, none at all.

This is exactly why Marijuana should be legal. Why would the gov't want to willingly put all of that money into the Organized Crimes hands?

Yeah, I don't understand it. The crime syndicates still make their money, plus the government has to put ridiculous amounts of funding into these busts. Sure, maybe a huge supplier gets busted and weed is a little dry for a little (that's what happens in smaller city settings, not large cities per say), but in the end everyone gets their drugs, and the US government just has to pay money to put these dudes through the justice system.

He may in fact, be a literal bum, only able to make himself known to us here by occasionally stopping into dark internet cafes to make a few quick, frantic posts before the owners force him to leave because of the stench of rotting vegetables and desperation wafting forth from his pores.
