It fucking sucks that you HAVE to have a qualification in a subject for someone to think you know anything about that subject.

For example, you could know shit loads about chemistry, let's say just as much as someone that has a masters degree, but if you don't have that piece of paper then people will just think you know jack shit about chemistry and so you would never get a chemistry related job.

There should be a way to prove your knowledge without having to go to college/uni, like a system that you can just take a test and the test would be the same level as the tests you'd do for a degree.

It seems like there is NO WAY to get a qualification(then good job)unless you go to college/uni and pay their ridiculous fees and get in debt.

It seriously pisses me off, I'd rather buy some books and sit down for hours everyday learning about all sorts of subjects, chemistry, biology, philosophy, electronic engineering.
obviously concentrating the most on whatever subject you want to work in.

You could also decide to stop studying something if you realized you didn't really like a subject, your kinda fucked if you do that 3 years into a degree.

This just stresses me out so much.

Do you think you could learn allot about a subject then apply for jobs in that area of work without a degree?

Just say, i knew allot about electronics and was really good at everything that that company needs me to know, and i can prove by showing them electronics devices I've designed and built. Do you think they'd still want me to have a degree?

also I've heard of graduate electronic engineers that couldn't even connect up a fairly simple circuit, all they really knew was theory but still got jobs just because they had a degree.

Do you consider yourself a master at something and yet lack a degree? If not, maybe you could find something less obscure and pointless (relative to your life) to :emocry: about? Just a thought.

Experience is just as good, if not better, than the piece of paper. Get your foot in the door wherever you can, demonstrate your outstanding knowledge with the subject matter and move up.

yeah i know I'm bitching but I'm annoyed.
Also did you read any of that, basically I'm saying it would be good to have a system where you could just take a test to prove your knowledge so you could get a decent job.

Those tests are called Final Exams and you take them at the end of every very expensive, and mostly worthless, semester.

I get what you're saying, and I agree with the testing part. I consider myself fairly intelligent, but I don't have a college degree. Partly because at this point I don't have time and partly because I have a hard time staying organized enough for the structured, assignment-merit based approach to education found at universities.

well that is what I'm thinking of doing, learning more about electronic engineering, and then try to get my foot in the door to get some experience, maybe even work for free for a while so they can see if they want to let me work for their company.
Then I'll have experience and knowledge.

Kind of like "try before you buy" lol

I haven't looked at any of this, but if you can gather anything from it more power to you. MIT posted a bunch of their professors' lecture notes and reading lists from their courses.

Tip: If you really have the full knowledge of a masters degree chemist then enroll for one semester and then take all the exams needed to finish the entire program.. And then you have it on paper..

Is that possible?
I'm not sure if that is possible in the uk.

When I went to college, it was possible for a limited number of classes to get course credit by doing a test. But not for a full degree.

Having a college degree also indicates to your employer a certain amount of discipline. When someone is hiring for a job they're usually looking for a lot more besides knowledge.

I see the point you're making. Students can be homeschooled through high school and can be accepted into universities, so why shouldn't the same apply to post-secondary education and getting a job?

I think there are many benefits from getting a university education over teaching yourself. Universities are institutions that have been around for centuries and have time tested methods of teaching. Although the professors aren't always the best teachers, they have been studying in their area for years and they usually know their shit. In university there are assignments, tests and deadlines - you have to do the work or you flunk out and go home. In a low pressure situation like studying from home, you are a lot less likely to learn at the same rate.

Also, there's the college experience that you're missing out on. You get to immerse yourself in a learning environment and associate with interesting people.

However, I agree that there should be an alternative for people who can't afford to go to school. Something like standardized tests to prove you have the knowledge.

For some programs it should work... not sure about chem though.. Lab courses have to be attended.. And for a total of 5yrs thats a lot of laborations..
