if one were to say , grind dried pods of the opium poppy to a pulp, macerate in alcohol for a few pulls, and then evap would the resulting residue be smoking quality opium? sounds easy enough without the hassle of growing and lancing poppies.

No too much plant matter and other things which make smoking not possible. The Ice-O-Latum process works and just a cold extraction let sit long enough for pulp to settle and just liquid on top that can be carefully siphoned off, filtered and dried works also. These processes however do not yield material as good as raw opium. It will be harsher and more difficult to vaporize. At least that's what swim tells me.
