 What qualifies as a hippie?

I personally dislike scruffy hippy types.
I think that white people don't look good with dreadlocks cause they just look greasy at worst and scuffy at best.
Anyways let's hear what makes one a hippie,
the farthest i would go is growing long hair and smoking grass, listening to the doors and hendrix...
PS. If you're reading this and you're white with dreads please do something about yourself...

i think hippie was a derogatory phrase used to define the counter cultures youth at a time.

At best I would say its more of state of mind or philosophy that isnt defined by 'dread locks' and clothing style.

I keep getting called a hippie, apparently because I like the outdoors, nature, going for hikes, smoke weed, enjoy psychedelics and have recently started doing Yoga.
Apparently I also have some 'hippie' ideals.
But, I dont really look like a hippie (unless I get lazy and forget to trim my beard, but I try and keep it trimmed and orderly), I dont have long hair, I dont have dreds, and I dont play bongos .. stupid bongo playing hippies 
I'd say being a hippie is more based on ideals / values and a personal philosophy, and not defined by what you wear or how you style your hair.
While certian 'looks' may seem to be popular amoungst a sub-culture, simply adopting that fashion sense does not make you whatever that sub-culture is trying to represent.

I've been called a hippie a few times... I enjoy spiritual enlightenment (not religious), I like psychedelics, smoke weed, and do a LOT of hiking and backpacking in the wilderness.
I have ideals too that are hippie in view...
But I have short hair and I shower daily.

Someone who spends all their time and energy bitching and complaining about the way things are, the machine and anyone who buys in to it; all while sitting on their ass doing nothing for themselves or the people around them. It was a fun idea for a while, but damn... sober up and get a job.
