first off, i think the quart jar recipe your friend used might take a little longer to pin than standard 1/2 pints most are used too. how is the temp where the jars are incubated? did you shake up the grain to spread the moisture evenly on the substrate and to speed colonization before and during inoculation?
if i'm correct pinning can take up to 1-2 weeks after 100 percent colonization. the yellow goo you mentioned sounds like water waste and does not neccessarily mean contam. www.mycotopia.net has pics about this.
if i were your friend i would dunk the cakes!!!! www.mycotopia.net has this tek too.
cause i too had similar pining problems corrected by simply dunking them before birth and birthing on the terranium (rubbermaid with perlite racked)3. but don;t expect success right away cause it still took me a few days (like 4) to see pinning after the cakes were dunked)
