Here's a simple thread on a simple topic. Please name unusual substrates you know have been successfully used to grow Cubes, and preferably back it up with a link from Search Posts if you want to take the trouble. Please specify if it was just vegetative growth or if it fruited also.
And, please tell us if you know it to be a good, decent or poor substrate.

Here's an unusual one: newspaper
From the look of it it fruits decently. I've also seen it on a bible, so it probably holds true for all paper that isn't overly processed.

wood chips (hardwood like alder)
Amazingly it works: cubies grow on woodchips of the kinds suitable for woodlovers, as proven by shroomerites. It grows decently vegetatively, but fruits poorly. This apparently has to do with nutrient deficiency as well as difficulty in penetrating the actual wood.
It seems that the smaller the wood bits, the better it frruits, and that nutrient additives like poo tea help in increasing fruiting yields.
Fine woodchips may be a good spawn medium, and if soaked and dusted with a suitable flour before pressurecooking probably takes spores as well as a grain cake, but at lower cost per liter of spawn produced.

Wood chips, regardless of size are in no way, shape or form suitable for growing cubes. Sorry. You can't beat grains, especially rye for spawn. Cubes fruit on dung and/or straw better than any other substrate. Wood is a bulk substrate material for. . .woodlovers such as P nameko, P cyans, shiitake, azures, etc. Oyster mushrooms seem to be able to cross over and fruit well on straw or wood, but few other species will, including cubes. Even for growing woodlovers, grain spawn is the proved favorite simply because it works best of all the hundreds of possible substrates tried. RR

I can't find the link, but I saw awhile ago someone grew some Cubes on a QP of White Widow. I'll keep looking for the link, but it colonized and fruited decently well (although it's certainly not a substrate most people would consider trying)

The coolest that I've seen( because it was the least practical ) was the grow somebody did on a QP of white widdow. I don't know who it was, maybe Agar.
Ridiculous for the sake of being ridiculous. Awesome.

You have NO IDEA how insane some of the people here can be... Wicked smart, helpful, funny... but absolutely insane. There was a thread a bit back where they posted all the crazy pics. I remember shedding a tear over the QP of white widow.
