Tip for winamp users with a 5.1 or wider surround card/amp/speakers: Dee3 is a plugin that extrapolates stereo mp3's to 5.1 audio, adding spatial enhancement and increasing subwoofer response.
Some tweaking required but once you get the settings just right the sound will KICK ASS.
It does use a substantial amount of CPU (up to 30% even on a 2+ ghz pc) due to the amount of calculation required. I totally love how it makes my 7.1 system sound so i use it whenever i can miss the cpu.
Highly recommended for audiophiles 
For improving the sound itself by fixing mp3 artifacts etc, DFX is an awesome DSP (though not free like dee3) - the best thing is dee3 is made as an Output plugin and not a DSP so you can easily use DFX and Dee3 combined. When configured right this combination sounds like a wet dream
