salvia divinorum laws

i would like to do something to prevent my state (connecticut) from putting unnecessary legal bounds on salvia. as far as i know, there have been no suggested possibilities of a law affecting salvia, but i don't want to wait until it's too late. it seems that states are quickly forming laws about salvia. however i am very politically unaware, if i were to compose a letter, which authority figure(s) should i address?
also would it be unwise to bring attention to the herb if there is not any current legal ontroversy over it?
thanks.

i think that bringing attention to something that wasnt already in the radar is a bad idea.
Bringing up the fact of keeping it legal is giving them more reason to ban it if they arent considering banning or regulating it already.

I was down at Venice Beach this weekend and I saw posters saying that California may impose a ban on Salvia D making it a class 1 felony for possession soon.

The only way you're going to be able to prevent any jurisdiction from legislating on Salvia (or anything else) is by lobbying the people who make these decisions & let them know the reasons against placing legal restrictions on its use. That means writing to your representatives (and potential representatives if there's an election coming up) and making it clear that there are no real reasons (other than that people can use it to get 'high') for legal restrictions and that some people do feel strongly on this issue.
I disagree with Drewwyann that "bringing attention to something that wasnt already in the radar is a bad idea." because Salvia is already in the radar in the U.S.A. A number of states have legislated on it and it is known about by the DEA & other law enforcement organisations, not to mention community 'all drugs are bad' groups. As any legislator is likely to listen to these groups I don't think that a strategy of don't mention it & hopefully they'll ignore it is likely to do any good. The best chance you have of preventing a Salvia law is to speak to your legislators before they get round to suggesting a law, as by that point they'll already have made up their minds & been convinced by law enforcement, etc and any change of opinion wouldn't be likely (could be portrayed as a U-turn, soft on drugs, etc and may have to be defended in the press by the legislator). You're more likely to keep Salvia legal in your state by making your (well informed) views known and explaining things to your state legislators before they take a public position & if possible before they get pressure to legally restrict Salvia. Then they'll have arguments for the other side (whether they choose to use them is another matter), a contact who can give information from personal experience and the knowledge that there is a variety of opinion out there (Try to be professional too they're more likely to listen to you if you're not a 'long haired hippie freak' but look/sound/dress like what they consider a respectable citizen - like them).
As to who personally you should speak to I'm not familiar with Conneticut's legal structure but I would suggest speaking to or writing to all the members of your State legislature (If your lower house is the only one which can initiate legislation it may be wise to start there) and to your Governor. I would stress the lack of medical evidence of harm, the increased waste of police time & resources in policing a ban, civil liberties (not usually a successful argument in the U.S.A. now but people still feel strongly) and the lack of any real justification for a ban. No doubt you can think of other arguments and points to make.

I wish Salvia was legal here. I live in Tennessee, and it was made illegal about a year ago. I never got to try it and want to now... *sigh*
