Pair charged after UPS finds pot package
December 6, 2006 - Daily Record

Kinnelon men accused after delivery company intercepts delivery from San Francisco

KINNELON -- Two men were arrested Wednesday night after a package containing a half-pound of marijuana and addressed to one of them was intercepted at the United Parcel Service depot in Parsippany, police said.

The package was the first to be seized in a three-month investigation of shipments between San Francisco and two homes in the borough -- one in the Kinnelon Estates section and the other in the Smoke Rise section, police said.

Joseph Rotondi, 19, of 641 Mountain Road, and Christopher Byrne, 20, of 11 Clearwater Drive, were charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and conspiracy to deal narcotics. Rotondi also was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance.

Police called

UPS officials alerted police at 11 a.m. Wednesday of a package with the 11 Clearwater Drive address, said Lt. John Schwartz. A drug-detecting dog indicated that the package was positive for an illegal substance and a search warrant for Byrne's home was issued.

At 7 p.m., officers said, they found a quarter-pound of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and a scale at the home. However, Schwartz said, Rotondi had been responsible for the main dealing operation.

"Because of recent drug arrests made in Kinnelon, (Rotondi) didn't have the packages delivered to his home anymore," Schwartz said. "He had the delivery made to a friend's home instead."

When officers later searched Rotondi's home, they found an additional quarter-pound of marijuana, several pipes, scales, hallucinogenic mushrooms and other packages that had been sent from San Francisco, police said.

Property seized

Police also seized $335, a laptop computer and a 2001 Mercedes from Rotondi's home. Schwartz said the laptop could provide information on the source of the package in San Francisco, which still is unknown. The car and cash were seized in association with the distribution of the drug, according to police.

The day before the arrest, Rotondi had been charged with marijuana possession (under 50 grams) and drug paraphernalia during a motor vehicle stop on Route 23 in Riverdale. He also was ticketed for having a drug in the vehicle, speeding and having tinted windows, Riverdale police said on Thursday night.

Rotondi was being held on Thursday at the Morris County jail on $50,000 bail, with the 10 percent option on the Kinnelon charges. Byrne was released on Wednesday night on $25,000 bail, officials said.

Both men were using their parents' home addresses for the shipments, police said.

Schwartz said this is the largest amount of marijuana seized in the borough this year. Since May, about five drug dealers have been arrested in the borough, all between 15 and 25 years old, Schwartz said.

U.S. postal investigators, the Morris County Prosecutor's Office and Kinnelon police are continuing to investigate the case.

Its interesting that the chain of events went:

1.cops suspect activity at address.

2.ups scans for said address.

3.ups calls cops when package to or from said address shows up.

3 month investigation.. they got snitched. But thats what happens when you go around tellin' all your friends how easy it was to transport weed through UPS. But only a QP? They wasnt selling that, that must have been personal. And whoever sent it needs to be on their toes, cause those kids prolly gonna tell too.

No, they said quarter pound. All you had to do was scroll back up and read it...at any rate, the reason they got charged with distribution was because of the scale.

Actually, they found a quarter pound at one of the addresses and an additional quarter pound at the other residence. The original package had half of a pound in it.

Anyways, it looks like they were too damn careless. Plus, it's a bit disconcerting that UPS will notify the "authorities" when a certain address shows up.
