Marijuana crop found in rooms
Thursday, December 07, 2006 By DAVID A. VALLETTE
GREENFIELD - An Ashburnham man was arrested and an extensive crop of marijuana was uncovered yesterday morning when police searched a building that was once used for growing bean sprouts, investigators said.
Acting on a tip that a drug deal had gone bad, and that someone may have been killed or injured, police said they obtained a search warrant and entered a building at 62 Newell Pond Road, off Bernardston Road.
Inside, investigators found four large rooms filled with marijuana plants in various stages of growth, police said.
While police searched the site, one of the building's owners showed up and was arrested, Sgt. Daniel McCarthy said.
Arrested was Donald Hale, 50, of Gibson Road, Ashburnham. He was arraigned in Greenfield District Court and pleaded innocent to charges of cultivating marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and trafficking in marijuana. Further information was not available yesterday.
McCarthy said that based on records found at the site, it is believed the operation was not new. "These guys have been there for a long time," he said.
Capt. John Newton, who led the search along with Sgt. Joseph Burge, said the operation was substantial and the plants had an estimated value of $200,000.
Police, including the department's Special Response Team, led by detectives, also brought in dogs, a helicopter and the Fire Department, as there was a report that someone may have been harmed at the site.
"There was no body or injured party found," however, McCarthy said.
He said the cultivation operation was extremely large, with four rooms of plants and smaller rooms, including an office.
Some of the plants were just seedlings, while others were 12 feet high, with some too tall for the room and bending and spreading after reaching the ceiling. McCarthy said the building was once used to grow bean sprouts.
To foster growth the operation had temperature and light controlling systems, including grow lights, fans and reflective material on walls, he said.
Police said more arrests are possible as the investigation continues.

Why would you sell in the same building that you're trying to hold a grow op? And we all know that drug dealers that shoot people in bad drug deals often times leave bodies where ever they drop.
Why don't those fuckin pigs just come out and tell everyone that they're scumbags and that they bullshit 3 out of every 5 warrants.
