Officers uncover 'commericial' marijuana operation near Fort Peck

FORT PECK, Mont. - Law enforcement officers say they uncovered an indoor marijuana-growing operation near here that was capable of yielding hundreds of thousands of dollars in drugs each year.

Ten state and Valley County law enforcement officers served a search warrant late last week at a farmstead two miles northwest of Fort Peck.

Sheriff Glenn Meier said the operation, which was spread throughout five buildings, was capable of producing pot with a street value of $500,000 to $700,000 annually.

"This is very much a commercial operation," he said.

No arrests have been made, but Meier said charges likely will be filed soon.

Because of the magnitude of the operation, deputies and investigators could not process the entire scene Friday night.

The man who occupies the residence has lived there for at least the past decade, Meier said.

Investigators began working the case four years ago.

"Drug work is endless tips," Meier said. "Gathering, listening, sitting. You have to develop the information, and it takes a long, long time."

He declined to comment further, citing the ongoing investigation. Officials with the Department of Justice Narcotics Bureau declined to comment.
