I think I've seen a post from a mod (99% sure it was RR) that had cubes growing off of some sort of wood chips like mulch or something.
Sawdust may make an interesting casing layer additive. If anything for texture, maybe? Make it easier to harvest?

Seems to me that wood lovers would do better on sawdust than cubes or more people would be using sawdust to grow them

That was my picture of the cubes fruiting on woodchips/sawdust. The point was I didn't inoculate the woodchips deliberately. It was a fruiting substrate of the cauliflower mushroom, that had cube spores land on it and they took over the substrate, forcing the actual woodloving species out.
However, the fruiting was poor, the mushrooms were small, and nowhere near the yield you'll get from coir, manure or straw. RR

Yeah, that was it. I was thinking it was accidental, but I don't trust my thoughts.
I didn't realize the question was spawned to sawdust. So would it make any type of casing layer? Maybe not saw DUST, but small wood chips?
