Cactus cutting cobweb mold! HELP
    #6321549 - 11/30/06 03:51 PM (6 years, 5 months ago)

I just received a cactus cutting from bouncing bear, and I think they did something rather foolish. It was freshly cut, its wound was still moist when I received it. Upon further inspection I encountered a familiar adversary... COBWEB MOLD!!! I also see what looks like may be the beginning of lipstick mold. The fresh end is all soft and mushy, including the central woody stem. I've never seen a cactus cutting with such a soft stem. I applied hydrogen peroxide directly to the fresh wound and patted dry. Now I feel like I may as well just make a new cut.

Any feedback?

You're just picking up all kinds of cool shit aren't you?

Don't worry about the core being mushy, that's fine. If the fresh end is really bad, then it would probably be best to cut the bad part off, let it scab and try to root it.

I wouldn't call what they did foolish; I'd call it down right shitty. Most places that care about their customers only sell rooted plants in the fall and winter because it's almost impossible to root a cutting this time of year, unless you're near the equator. Just taking cuttings this time of year, greatly increases the chances of mold and infection. I see this company do so many backwards (and upside down ) things, that it simply amazes me that people still buy from them.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of cutting did you receive?

This is my first negative experience with them. Its probably also going to be my last, after a good experience with maya.

I'm ordering the cacti now because I figured I could hold onto them till the spring time and root them then. I've heard they can keep for over one year. I did however root a trichocereus pachanoi I received from a fellow shroomer successfully over the last couple of weeks. Its tip has turned light green and begun to put out new aeroles. I just placed its scabbed bottom in some dry soil with lots of perlite in it and propped it up.

What would really bad be? Like if it starts to turn black and shrivel up, or if the mold comes back?

The kind I got thats infected is Trichocereus brevispinulosus, they claimed its been known to be "very intellgent" which I perceived as very active. I also ordered t.bridgesii, and t.macrogonus. They're for growing though. I will harvest off of them when the time comes, but these are for growing.

i would just cut the afflicted area off and let it calus proper

should be A-OK

as for the rooted one with the light green tip....sounds like its trying to grow but conditions are off.

while this wont hurt it, it will get stretched. you can safely not water it and place it somewhere a bit cooler(if possible) to make it go dormant

Huh. If it's possible, would you mind posting a pic of the macrogonus they're selling?

I got a bridgesii cutting from them a while ago, ugly thing with rot on the bottom. It rooted for me fine, and now it's got a really cool four-ribbed pup that looks like it's taking on monstrose characteristics.

Well, the pachanoi hasn't been watered at all. And there are places I could move it which are cooler. Whats the temperature need to be to cause dormancy? I'll do that today.

I guess I'll just cut the bottom end off of the brevispinolosus.

If I can find a digital camera to borrow, I will post a picture of the macrogonus cutting.

That'd be great, I'd love to see it. My macrogonus is one of my favorite plants, and if theirs look nice I'd probably get another.

As for dormancy temps, maybe in the fortys or low fiftys. Do you have a garage or basement that gets pretty cool but not into freezing temps?

I must say the cutting itself is rather roughed up. It looks like macrogonus to me though. Its growth is uneven, getting thicker towards the top. Plus lots of scarring and snapped spines. Not very pretty to me. I'd like to see your macrogonus though.

Just don't leave a catus out in freezing temps for long periods. They can get frostbite and stop growing from the tip, sometimes causing it to branch out (which can be cool). But I've also seen them 'pop' when the water inside them freezes and expands so much that it breaks out of the skin.(not as cool)

I live in an apartment with a cellar, lots of people keep their plants down their during the fall and winter. I think it may get below freezing in there sometimes though. Thats the best place I can think of.

That should be perfect, a little freezing won't hurt them, they're desert natives after all. You just don't want to leave them out in a week long snow storm.

Thanks!

The most visible one behind it is a strange pachanoi.  It's crested at the bottom, but turns into 6 oddly shaped columns.  Very fan-like.  But it's also got a crested pup on it that's about the size of a quarter.  If I get around to it, I'll take a more recent pic.
