Drug trafficker warns kids off ecstasy
A SELF-confessed drug trafficker has joined forces with Queensland police to create a DVD that warns against the use of ecstasy. The 30-year-old man, who is not identified in the DVD, has spoken about how he became involved in illegal drugs, the personal consequences of his spiral into dependency, dealing and his ultimate arrest in a covert police sting.
"First time, I had half a tablet and I enjoyed it, basically, and from there it just went on. Next thing I knew I was addicted to ecstasy,'' he said in the video.
"It destroys your life - every aspect of it.''
Police yesterday distributed copies of the DVD to the media in the hope it would reinforce their anti-drugs message in the lead-up to Schoolies Week on the Gold Coast, which starts tomorrow.
"It's certainly timely that the Schoolies event is happening this weekend, but as you're well aware the Gold Coast is not the only place in Australia where drugs are distributed,'' Drug Squad Superintendent Brian Wilkins said.
"This is part of a much wider campaign to actually raise awareness in ecstasy users and raise the impacts that ecstasy can not only have on your health, but the impact that a conviction in relation to possession of ecstasy can have on your future life prospects, including employment and travel.''
Supt Wilkins said the DVD, which may one day be distributed to schools, was aimed at users of all ages.
But he said previous police investigations had revealed that young people were particularly vulnerable to drug dealers.
"Certainly, if you're a major distributor you need to target a number of underlings to distribute your drug for you and obviously young people are vulnerable to be targeted,'' he said.
The "star'' of the DVD agreed that many young people quickly got in over their heads.
"If they get drugs from one particular person and they hand it on to a friend to move a couple of tablets, before they know it they're trafficking,'' he said.
Earlier this week, police conducted a major drug bust that, they said, took $357,000 worth of ecstasy and cocaine off Gold Coast streets.
Four men have been charged over the incident.
