sorry for the gay little japanese anime faces. anyway I found these growing in front of my apartment complex. anyone know what species they are? I assume they're edible because of the white spore as you can see they have in the middle.
sorry I haven't been hanging out here in the hunting forums much anymore. i've really been into cultivating psilocybes recently so i've been in the cultivation forums recently I need to start goin out to the woods and playing the field again, no pun intended.

They look a bit like lycoperdon perlatum, but I doubt it's exactly that species. Something in the lycoperdon genus seems probably though.

they look like conjoined snowmen
i love puffballs. i keep passing them by lately and forgetting all the good meals i've made with them in the past and the people i've shared them with who needed a good starting place for picking edibles.
cheers to the unassuming little puffball.

I'm sorry if this seems petty, but I believe a spore print is required for all proper mushroom identification.
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/5731447/an/0/page/0
"Spore print color is one of the most IMPORTANT features for identification. You MUST take one for all ID requests. It is getting tiresome to have to constantly tell people to take spore prints. For those who don't know how to do a spore print, see this document."
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/2263556/an/0/page/0
"Along with the pictures YOU ARE REQUIRED to provide the following data:
* Habitat (where [woods, pasture, state, province, country, altitude] and what [soil, dung, wood (dead, living, what kind of wood?)] does it grow on) * Characteristics of the gills (color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc) * Characteristics of the stem (length, diameter, color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc) * Characteristics of the cap (diameter, color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc) * Spore print color (very important!) * Color that the mushroom bruises * Scent of the mushroom * Anything else you might find important"
BTW I like your anime avatar, it pairs along very well with your forum name. ^_^

isn't it impossible to make a spore print of a puff ball?

I don't think so, but I am basing my opinion on other puff balls which seem to have spore prints.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_puffball
It says in the lower right-hand corner that the spore print is brown. Perhaps I am misinterpreting the description though, or perhaps the feasibility of spore prints depends on the specific species.

Ehehehehe.... well, what the spore print entails in this circumstance, is that as the mushroom matures, the spores inside of the mushroom, dry out and turn to a fine spore powder, often turning a darker colour with age. As the mushroom matures, and the spores dry, the leathery flesh of the outside of the mushroom, turns brittle, and cracks, allowing the powdery spores to be blown (or kicked ) away.
As you can see in the second photo, the mushrooms spores are not yet mature, and instead, the center contains a soft and damp material, which is the immature spore material. Trying to spore print by say, taking a half section of this mushroom and setting is on paper, would simply result in wet, stained paper.
If you were to attempt cutting a mature puffball in half, it would crack or tear apart in a jagged fashion, and powdery spores would fall out.
