Sponge cake fruiting chamber (pic)
    #6269788 - 11/10/06 07:52 PM (6 years, 6 months ago)

Until you’re ready for something better, you could scrounge up a dome type cake saver at a thrift store, and buy a pack of cheap all-purpose sponges. Scrub with hot water and Lysol, and rinse the heck out of everything, especially the sponges. Re-wet the sponges until they’re sopping wet, and place 3 or more in the bottom of the cake saver. Place your loaf pan (my favorite) of cased mycelium on the sponges, and pop on the top. Fan by lifting the top several times a day, using the dome as a fan.

Humidity stays high if you keep the sponges wet and spray the inside of the dome to keep it nicely covered with water droplets at all times. The fresh air supply is reasonably good with intermittent fanning because there’s plenty of open space around the pan and the dome is not airtight. If it must be left unfanned for a couple of days, prop the dome open with a spoon, pen, or similar small object.

Pans often spend a month or more in the fruiting chamber, and by that time perlite gets nasty. With the sponge cake setup, you can clean it every week or so, while the precious ones enjoy a sauna in a steamy bathroom. Cleanliness is important late in the game when the mycelium gets weak and increasingly susceptible to contaminants.

Ya'll have fun now.

Actually, they get about as big as I want them. I crumble a fully colonized cake into a half-inch bed of oven-sterilized BRF/verm, and top it with 1 inch of the same. Put it into a warm incubator box for 4-5 days before casing. I pulled this one for printing the day before I took the pic of the sponge cake setup.

I actually think I'm gona try this with some of my cakes or one of my casings, because my fruiting chamber isn't big enough for all the shrooms I wanna fruit. Which should I fruit in this chamber, some of the cakes or one of the casings?

Although sponges are a great media for harboring pathogens a ONE TIME use may provide an alternative for some as long as everything is kept clean. Some may think that there is no way contams could survive on something so inert but think again many pathogens can get a foothold from even the slightest trace of nutrients which can be provided by something as easily as dust, foreign spores germinating or even through contact with your own skin. In these instances the time required for a good foothold to take place would be longer than it would take one to bring a flush or two to maturity. GL with that

Interesting, maybe Ill reconsider and just place the cakes on top of each other and on top of the casings. I'll just cram them all in my fruiting chamber.

to avoid contaminations microwave the sponges or saturate them with a dilute solution of bleach in water... sponges aren't really different from perlite or vermiculite

I suggest phasing out of cakes and into casings. The mycelium fruits so much better when given more time to grow. The extra 10 days (more or less) of growing time is time well spent.

Great point about cleanliness. Sponges may, indeed, provide habitat for contaminants, so it’s important to disinfect them not just between uses, but about once a week. While I’m at it, I also clean the inside of the dome. Besides being cheap and easy, the sponge cake set up can be cleaned during the sometimes lengthy incubation phase, which is impossible with perlite.

Hey guys, remember this?

Well, AFOAF tried this method after this tek was posted. It's really simple and has produced. Now on the 4th flush. Flushes have been rather low in quantity and the mushrooms are smallish. i don't think there's enough FAE, and they are fanned often throughout the day. BUT, i think it's been pretty good because like i said AFOAF got 4 flushes (at least). Some of the other casings put into tubs with perlite failed or were not nearly as prolific.

Hey yeah it the sponges again...yippee

Maybe the sponges don't provide enough transpiration. IF I was gonna do it I wouldn't sit the tray on top of the sponges, but rather place them around it.
But I wouldn't anyways so whatever.
There is absolutely no shortage on perlite.

There was altogether not enough room in there to sit the casing on top of the sponges because the shrooms grew up and touched the roof that way. Some days the lid would be left open on an angle for awhile to promote transpiration.
