Do you have/want children?

Lately, I've noticed a lot of people who are rather cynical about children, and don't much care for them. Personally, I love kids, have always been good with them and hope to have a couple of my own some day. How about you?

While I think it would be awesome to have a kid of my own one day, I hold certain moralistic views against adding to the problem of overpopulation. I just think that human beings have multiplied beyond a sustainable population and we are quickly reproducing our selves to death.
My girlfriend has two children and I will be happy to raise them with her. If however, she does get pregnant, I will be happier even yet. But, I will then go get a vasectomy.

Honestly, I think the whole "overpopulation" thing is overplayed. It's based largely on the flawed theories of Thomas Malthus. The fact is that there are enough resources for everyone on Earth. There's just a problem with the unequal distribution of those resources.

I don't have any, but want one someday, two at the most. I'm a fan of lowering our population.
If all 6 billion people got together (1 man, 1 woman), excluding homosexuals, and only had one child, within that generation, the population would be cut in half after the parents died

Humans living far beyond planet's means: WWF
Quote:
Humans are stripping nature at an unprecedented rate and will need two planets' worth of natural resources every year by 2050 on current trends, the WWF conservation group said on Tuesday.
Quote:
"Humanity's footprint has more than tripled between 1961 and 2003," it said. Consumption has outpaced a surge in the world's population, to 6.5 billion from 3 billion in 1960. U.N. projections show a surge to 9 billion people around 2050.
A conscious effort to conserve resources will help but the fact of the matter is that there is only so much space on earth and the human population is growing steadily. Modern science decreases the mortality rate of infants and increases our lifespans. Unless people begin to limit their family size, we WILL, without a doubt, screw ourselves into a corner. Perhaps space travel will one day provide an escape for some of our descendants, but right now that is simply not an option. I'm not saying that people should stop having children.
I love kids.
Babies are fun.
Toddlers are a blast.
Rather I'm suggesting that more people should consider reproduction very seriously. And not just for their sake but for the sake of the children that are born. People need space to live. Clean air to breath. Clean water to drink. Having fewer people on earth definitely helps make that happen.

I agree. When people are like "yeah, that family has 6 children!!!" most people are like, "wow, how special, they must be loving people."
My reaction is "They're selfish."

Something like 15 million children starve to death each year, a number that is likely to grow by tens of millions in the next 20 years according to a recent New Scientist report. To me it does seem very selfish to want a child when we can't feed the children who are already present.

If I were to have a kid, I would want to adopt. I really have just about no urge to have a child of my own, although I have strong maternal instincts.
I really think theres too many unwanted kids as it is, why have my own, when I can provide care for a life which has already begun.
Why leave another kid in the cold just to have one of my own.
Im also adopted so I've got bias

My wife an I agreed a long time ago that we are too selfish to ever want children. I want to spend our money on us, not some little shit that wont listen and in 18 years leave and do everything we taught it not too.

You may be bias, but it is a better decision morally, anyway.
I'm adopted, and IF I wanted kida, I would adopt, because it is self-ish to conceive a child when others are unwanted.

As I grow older I'm slowly changing my mind from "I fucking hate kids" to "You know, it might be cool to have kids some day."
But then the problem of genetics comes in. If I had a kid, I'd want it to have my genes so I could see what traits of myself/wife are expressed in the child. I'd also feel kinda weird adopting someone else's kid. But I have various health problems that I wouldn't want to pass on to a kid... so I have no clue. Maybe by the time I'm ready to settle down and have kids they'll be able to fix my genetic health issues.

I think the world is plenty overpopulated without me contributing to the problem. I wish people would put more thought in their desire to spawn. It's one of the most environmentally irresponsible things you can do.
Silversoul, look around you... Malthus and resources aside. Every single environmental problem is magnified exponentially by the addition of more people. Sure, we can FEED plenty more... but how much natural habitat will that cost? How many endangered species already on the brink of extinction? How much clean water? How much clean air? Global warming anyone? I could go on, and on, and on... but it's not worth it. You honestly have to be blind or stupid to not see where our planet is headed if we keep breeding.

There are solutions to all the problems you mentioned that are much more practical than stopping that which we are biologically programmed to do. Breeding is not the cause of these problems, and they won't go away just because you decide not to have children. I intend to raise my children to make smart, responsible decisions, and to make the world a better place. The problem is not the number of people, but rather the number of irresponsible people.
