Colorful Mushroom Hunt!

Vividly blue hydnellum. Stuck out like a sore thumb on the forest floor

Underside showing teeth and part of it's deep root

More blue mushrooms, clitocybe perhaps?

Totally cool lichen

Mossy, lichen covered rockslide

Colorful indeed! That blue hydnellum is very impressive indeed.
I really like the last phot, it's a very strong image. You could boost the saturation somewhat and add some contrast, that would result in an excellent photograph!

Try The Gimp. Free, almost the same functionality as Photoshop. Only drawback is that the user interface isn't quite as nice as Adobe's, but it's very usable.

Did the Hydnellum have an odor? The common one like that here has a strong, almost sickeningly sweet odor, but there's a similar species without any odor.
Happy mushrooming!

So which Hydnellum is that??? I did a search using the words "Blue Hydnellum" and the first thing that came up was Hydnellum caeruleum, the blue and orange Hydnellum on Tom Volk's site.

I keyed it out as best I could with Arora's MD and that was actually what I came up with. I didn't post it because I was afraid to jump to conclusions at the time. It had grown around twigs which hydnellums tend to do. It also had a very deep root about 6-8" attached to what appeared to be rotted wood. It was nasty looking. From what I read about it's fruiting cycle, we caught it at the very best time visually. Like a rose in bloom! Hydnellums turn to brown, woody clumps and you'd never know how pretty they were...
