Switching to WBS instead of rye.

So I have been haveing crazy issues with rye and have had enough of it so I am trying to get a very very quick and simple method going down.
What I am going to do , and I got this idea from mycotopiate membor sandman, is take warm tap water or 110-120 degree water and soak the wbs in that for one hour, then load 1 3/4 cups of the rinced and soaked seed into a jar and 1/4 cup of water to that and PC.
Would that work, cause sandman sure thinks so but he said he has only done it with LC and not multispore.

you could do that, oooooor, you can measure out your birdseed, put it in a pot, fill pot with water until the grains are completely submerged, and then simmer it for a 1.2 an hr. Then dump the grains into a strainer and drain the excess water, strain the grains until you dont see a lot of steam coming off of them, and then load into jars and pc for an 1 hr and 1/2.
This eliminates any problem you may have from residual water in your jar. That added step is a dangerous one if you dont do it right because having a pool of standing water in your jar is going to render it useless. Id skip it if i were you, unless you're willing to experiment and possibly lose a jar.
There's a "tek" out there that doesnt even call for simmering. It's similar to the method you've described, but you skip the soaking step and load dry grains into your jar and then cover the grains with water. PC for and 1 hr 1/2 and at the end you're supposed to end up with perfectly hydrated grains. Never tried it myself honestly, but if you do some searching you should find it.

Sounds sketchy. I guess anything is worth a shot. For what its worth, in my experence, an 8hr soak in COLD water gets the job done. I'd say thats pretty quick and simple. Does this mean a 1hr soak in HOT water will do the trick? Who knows?!

I load all my jars about 3/4th of the way full (have to leave room for the grains to expand).
Fill jars to the top with water.
Let soak for 24 hours.
Pour out all excess water until you only get a drip or two.
PC 50min at 15psi good to go.
I get perfect jars every time.

S33D, thats cool that it works that way for you. All the teks and info on this site suggest rinsing to get rid of the endospores that have been germinated as a result of the soaking. I guess your contam rates are fairly low or you would have stopped using that method, yea? WBS is an odd thing..

You soak WBS so that the endospores do germinate. That makes them susceptible to heat sterilization. Most people will tell you endospores aren't really a problem and i think thats true as well. I soak for 24 hours cause it gives me the right moisture content before I PC. and 24 hours is just what works for me. I'm sure you could soak for less time.

I'm not sure about that link, but this one was suggested to me and it is going pretty well so far. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/3983870
Also add a pinch of gypsum to each jar, to further reduce clumping. GL
PS. try to get seed without cracked corn in it. Its a smoother ride this way.

FYI rye kicks ass on WBS thats a fact you can take to the bank! Get it right and rye is hard to beat and potent as hell remember buffer your rye before PCing. WBS is cheaper and slower so weight the pro vs. cons. SOAKING WBS - GRAINS & TIMES - FINAL ANSWER When I used WBS this worked perfectly for over 300lbs.

the above sounds like a good tek after 24 hours of soaking, you do not want too much standing/extra water before you pc

I agree with Hyphae. Rye or any other grass seed is very simple and doesn't require soaking. Simply mix and pc. I only use bird seed because it's cheaper around these parts.

don't simmer for 1.2hr.
but simmer for 20 min, till the water is hot (steam comming off pot) then let sit in the hot water for 2 hrs.
this keeps any grain from bursting, but gives maximum capacity for saturation.

Wild bird seed prep is quite simple, and very very cheap, there are small bags that will do about 6 quart jars for 87 cents at walmart they dont have many of those sunflower seeds and such either.
