Chlorine Lead Fluorine Pesticides and ??

Do you ever get tired of drinking bleach or breathing the vapor of chlorine as you stand in the hot shower? I do. Not only chlorine but the lead from rotting old pipes and heavy metals and all kinds of crap are in tap water. You know it's got to be bad for your health.
The only solution to the problem in terms of what you drink is proper water filtration. Proper filtration means multiple stages with the final stage reverse osmosis (RO). That usually means a lot of money for an RO system $400 bucks for any kind of decent gallons per day (GPD). And you are limited to water used for drinking or cooking. Check out www.aquariumwaterfilters.com drinking water system at $ 169+20 for the 100 GPD system. It's quality equipment and the water I get out is measured by a solids meter is 2 parts per million (PPM) which is pretty darn good considering it goes in at 145 PPM.
Anyway not intended as a sales pitch but if you have a couple hundred bucks it's nice to have clean water on demand at least for drinking and cooking. You can pull out 2 gallons in a minute or so with a full expansion tank but after that it comes out a trickle.
For real volume you can't go RO but at least can get the chlorine out and most other things harmful to your health. The best one I found so far is the Rhino EQ-300 from www.equinox-products.com at $ 675.

No, if you drink a gallon of tap water a day you will go.
But you either buy a filter or you are a filter take your choice. Some tap water is pretty good other is horrible. When things happen like when the chlorinator check valve gets stuck as admitted by my local water company then it makes sense why plants die and you are also ingesting that stuff.
If nothing else it's better to fill a pitcher and put it in the refrigerator. In a couple of days the chlorine will dissipate. Likewise let water stand a couple of days before using it to water plants. However, this will do nothing for many other bad things that could be in the water...

nice thread. I use Berkey gravity filters for drinking / cooking water and a KDF filter for the shower. the Berkey can be fitted with fluoride / arsenic post filters for a few bucks extra. http://berkeywater.com/start.main.html seems like an exspensive luxury item, but it's really a life saver well worth the cost. you'll never drink municipal water again after using one of these...it just tastes like crap.

Its a bad idea to remove GOOD minerals from your water though, your sodium, potassium, lithium, calcium and magnesium as chlorides sulfates phosphates nitrates and hydrogen carbonates.
It would be best if you shopped for the heaviest mineral water you can find, and add some of that to your demineralized water.
Its really not good to drink demineralized water.

For the record, Berkey claims to "leave in beneficial nutrients", whatever that means. I'd actually like to get some before and after tests done myself to see what the deal is.

I have a Brita filtered water container. Fill it up ever 7 glasses or so. There you go.

Its really not good to drink demineralized water.
What you say is true in that if someone drank demineralized water from distillation, reverse osmosis, deionization or from rain water or snow they could conceivably end up with a mineral deficiency. But, if they ate healthy foods rich in minerals, ate natural sea salt and took a vitamin pill I doubt you could argue they will end up in poor health from the minerals missing from their water. Or perhaps you could? I couldn't find any definitive studies.
In any case most of the water filters sold (with the exception of reverse osomosis RO type) do NOT remove the bulk of minerals in water. They aren't able to. People don't like the taste (actually lack of)of demineralized water anyway so a filter that doesn't remove the minerals will be more popular.
For people in a house the whole house filter I mentioned earlier is a good way to go. It takes out the bad stuff in multiple stages while leaving in the good minerals. It doesn't restrict flow (most filters severely restrict flow). It works for every faucet shower head and hose bib in the house (most filters are point of use). It lasts for 400,000 gallons and that's a lot of water. Most filters have media that needs to be replaced much more frequently and that adds up. Or at some point they neglect to replace and the filter is useless.
The worst thing anyone ever does to their water is to soften it. Not only is all of the chlorine lead and potential bacteria there but the good minerals (calcium and magnesium) are exchanged on a resin bed with the worst minerals (purified sodium and chloride). Just what your body didn't need, more white salt.

Thanks for the link to Berkey. I like the travel units you can use with really nasty water.
The KDF for shower is nice I use a similar type. Breathing that chlorine in vapor form is likely worse than drinking it.

Yeah the portable water bottles are awesome. REFILL CAPACITY: Water From Any Source: 160 Refills, Municipal Water: 640 they're usually about 40$ each but infowars.com has a sweet special on 5 for 100$... They make great gifts.
