 Mushroom hunting by canoe with pics.

I found my new favorite way to mushroom hunt, by canoe! Took a trip down a small river last weekend, not even thinking about mushroom hunting. The first thing I noticed, was what I first guessed to be hen of the woods due to the massive size. 
This log was totally covered fungi in the late stages of fruiting. This mushroom had a very lovely rich odor. After returning home and consulting my books a am 90% sure it’s sulfur shelf (Laetiporus sulphureus). It definitely had the characteristic bright yellow tubes. The caps where much duller when the pics in my book, but I attributed this to being older specimen. The caps where salmon colored in the middle and light yellow. It’s posibly subspecies; semialbinus. A spore print was impossible this late stage of fruiting, but, I’ll check the log to see if it fruits again. My next nice find was a good size specimen of: Bearded tooth: Hericium erinaceus. 
Very exciting for me and easy to make a 100% ID. I tried sautéing it in some butter and beef broth. It was not unpleasant tasting, but not choice either. My dog ended up eating the bulk of it. Next time I’ll try a deferent cooking technique and remove the spines, which seem to be bitter.
I’ll definitely be using this hunting technique again. It’s perfect for collecting specimens that fruit on trees. I’m planing on using the canoe during morel season to. Should be an easy way to get access to some excellent territory without any competition from other hunters.

Great idea! I did that once and found some hedgehogs. Now that chantrelle season is here, I think I'll dust off the kayak and throw it in the back of the truck. So early into the season and I've found most of my patches have already been harvested.

Hunting by canoe is a great idea. LizardKing took me out in his canoe and we went down the river to a cow field and picked a ton of cubensis.

I'd be happy enough just to find some hericiums on foot, let alone while on a boat in a river!

i've never seen or heard of that mushroom. it looks like a head of hair or a loaf of bread with fur on it.

It's some good stuff when cooked/harvested properly 
It wont make you "trip balls" though.

don't get me wrong i have been into edibles alot lately. i've found a patch of chanterelle in a park near my house. they are tasty and I love how the look
