Shaggy Mane MANIA!

Holy CRAP!
So I went mushroom hunting behind my house, and found all the lovely mushrooms you can find in my OTHER two recent threads, ranging from corts, chants, hen of the woods, chicken fat bolete, to amazing polypores.
So, I post my finds...and head to a work meeting at a nearby park. My manager and I arrive early, so we take a walk. We talk about all sorts of things, when suddenly she points to the edge of the park woods (this park is about a 10 minute WALK from my house, and I frequent it often).
"Wow...look at all the mushrooms." she says, half-heartedly.

"AHHHHHHHHHH! SHAGGY MANES!"
It was the first time I've ever come across the [allegedly] delicious shaggy mane, and this is the first time my boss saw my fascination with mushrooms. Needless to say, whan I trotted over to the sea of shaggies that lay under the aspens and willows, and began touching them, and examing them (making sure they arent a look-a-like) -- my boss attained a crooked eyebrow.
"They're edible?"
"Yes. One of the best, or...so I hear."
"Michael, you really shouldn't eat mushrooms."
"Oh shut up."
And so, I give you, the final finds from today! (And perhaps the MOST exciting!)
Do enjoy, and PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE give me some tips on PRESERVING, cooking, and consuming these beauties! I'm going to collect them tomorrow afternoon after work! Also...at what stage of growth are these mushrooms best? Obviously it seems the black inky stage is beyond edibility, but can you eat these fleshy shaggy sprouts?

On a different note, I found a small group of ANOTHER species growing in the same vascinity. Any idea what these beautiess are? And, are they edible?:

It's been a GREAT day for me, as you can see. I can't wait to sink my teeth into these guys. Hopefully they're still around tomorrow!

As long as the gills are still pure white they're good.
You'll want to cook them right away or they'll keep deliquescing. Even frozen solid they'll do it. Once cooked they can be frozen in plastic bags (split them into one serving per bag).
There are lots of recipes on the Internets for them. I like them with scrambled eggs.
Happy mushrooming!

Nice find, & pics. I've read that pickling is good storage for shaggy manes.

I bet you could dry as well as freeze the extras. I have had success drying this species of Coprinus in the past.

Awesome find. In all of the years in hunting in this part of the country, I've never come across a patch of that size.

WELL...I plucked the remaining shaggies from the park yesterday, only to find that many had expired. I noticed groups of them had been picked and laid on the ground in piles, as if someone picked and determined them to be past edibility!
I did manage to pluck a few quality ones though, and fried them up in my scrambled eggs, and eat them on toast.
Yum.
(New rain might just allow me to get more shaggy manes before the weeks end!)

mikeyyork said: I don't think i'm going to eat them though. Ive just read this:
"It is important to note that coprine leaves the body primed for poisoning for several days (even a week by some reports) after eating the mushroom. Therefore, it is not only the consumption of a coprine-containing mushroom and an alcoholic drink at the same time that can cause coprine poisoning. Symptoms can also occur if someone drinks wine, for instance, two or more days after the meal or eats a coprine-containing mushroom after consuming alcohol"
I want to drink tomorrow night,, .
Coprinus comatus doesn't contain coprine.

These are indeed wonderful. I worked for city parks department (in Montana, where I no longer live) a few years and they would grow in some of the parks. They are great sauteed with a bit of butter. They taste like asparagus, if it was the best tasting asparagus you've ever ate. I find these to be the best tasting edible mushrooms around but they'll turn to ink quickly so don't lend themselves to supermarket sales. I find that if you keep them in cold water in the fridge you can keep them for a day or two without them going to ink. Without that its a matter of hours. They also ink faster it seems to me (but on this I'm totally unsure) if you wrap/cover/inclose them. I've had good luck in keeping them spread out in a cardboard box but when I found a patch of 20 of them and wrapped them up ina sweatshirt because I had nothing else to carry them in they went to ink very quickly and stained the sweatshirt permanently.

I've heard that a good way to keep them is in a bowl of water in the fridge.
